Question CD vs. Downloads

Hey guys, was reading up on some Lifehacker. Great site.

Lifehacker - "Computers make us more productive. Yeah, right. Lifehacker recommends the software downloads and web sites that actually save time. Don't live to geek; geek to live."

I came across this article that peaked my interest. Something that probably many people have wondered about.

Alpha Geek: CDs vs. Downloads

The editor compares still buying CDs or just Download. I'll let you read it if you want to see what he says.

IMO: I think that CDs are going the way of VHS and cassette. They are not going to be history just yet though. I saw a statistic in the Dallas Morning News's Auto section a couple of months ago saying that "75% of 2007 auto's come with MP3 player connectability." That is a big number. I see the "iPod/Cell Phone" generation. I see eight year olds with cell phones, portable DVD players, and MP3 players.
Man, when I was that age i was playing with Lego's. (Lego's were great, my pre- Mechanical Engineering.) Anyways...

I enjoy "downloading" my media. I too use to buy CDs. After many a CD that was awful, except for the one track that I bought it for, I decided that CDs were not the way to go.

I can't say that I participate in the iTunes Store, Napster, Yahoo.... all that stuff. I get my media through other means. Not the point.

What do ya'll think?

I like downloading music when im not bothered about owning the physical commodity, but some things, you just gotta own on conventional media types.

Looking at my CD rack on my desk of most played CDs, I see Hospital Records promos, lots of hard to find DnB/Jungle mixes and a slew of other uncommon DnB albums.

That kinda thing, I just have to have own physically, because I love my drum and bass and enjoy collecting rare material, as well as just listening to it from my computer.

Im sure others will empathize with this, with whatever kind of media/genre they are into

Personally....

...if it wasn't for downloading, I'd never have bought half the CD's that I have.

Hell, half of the stuff that I've bought is something that -never- gets aired, because of where I live.

That being said... CD's are a pain to store (well, keep organized.. throwing them in the binders is easy), but MP3's have the whole 'omg my hard drive pooped' problem.... and organizing, depending on how you get them.

So I guess, for me... my "Other" is really Both.

Well i used to buy all my CD's, I have 200 - 300 but in the last couple of years everything has been a download.

I like to buy games rather than get them direct to drive becuase i like to have the physical copy and look through the manuals.

Software is the same, I like to have disks.

I didn't say I had the problem, I was mentioning the possibility of it happening =P

I've had the same data drive for like.. 3 years.. only complaint is that its too small now =X

EDIT: And since Reza brought games into it...

Always buy 'em on CD.... between reformats and LAN's, discs are invaluable.

? I wasn't suggesting you had the problem in the first place, simply pointing out an obviously solution to the stated problem.

While I vote download for music, I vote CD for games.
Steam has taught me that lesson.

CDs ftw, I've only run into one CD that was "rip-protected" and it ripped just fine.

I do both. Some things are best to get the whole CD, like Pink Floyd, Zepplin, etc. Some things you can't find on CD anywhere. Downloading also saves me gas and a trip to the zoo, more commonly known as Best Buy.

I upgrade alot, which means a lot of fresh installs per year. Which means
alot of redownloads when you forget to make a copy. And Steam may or
may not let you download depending on how many people are using Steam.
And don't even think about redownloading an old game if they've just released
a new game. I hate Steam, I won't buy a download from them ever again.

I am with you Slaymate i use to pay to download from Steam and they did the same thing to me, the same thing goes for a place called Direct To Drive i bought and paid for a game called Brothers in Arms and they sent me a cd key via E-mail and when i finish downloading the game and went to put the cd key in it, it would not work, of course i called and E-mailed customer support several times about it and with no luck they would not give me a answer or new cd key for the one that did not work, what a waste of $49.99 for game i can not use or play so for now on if i buy games it will be on cd only. My vote for music is download as for games it will only be a cd only unless it is a demo i like to try out.

Cool will going to check it now, i was really piss off when they told me if i wanted a new cd key or replacement i would have to buy one i said why when i already had one that you sent me and this all happen in within a 24hr period and i would make sure to tell everyone i knew that had Steam or Direct to Drive never to buy from them, don't get me wrong Steam is ok to play on but as to buying downloads from them they have piss poor customer service and getting any help from them to solve a problem that was not even my fault but there's.

CD's = ~1500 kb/s

Downloads = ~ 192 kb/s

I thnk I've made it clear where I stand. Actually, being into the genre of trance, I find myself buying A LOT of vynils.

Most radio stations only play Popular Music (not pop). Ever notice how nothing "hardcore" gets played on the radio?

Thats what back ups are for.

I Download stuff, use to get CDs..well Sometimes I do, it depends on the game. As for music, I download it (Yes I pay for it). Then I burn it to a mp3 CD for the car or something.

No, I'm saying I live in Fargo, ND - we have 1 rock, 1 classic rock, 1 pop music, and 5 country stations.

Techno doesn't fit into any of the stations here... aside from the once a day, at best, on the pop station... at some obscene hour that I'd rather not stay up for.
