The Athlon 64 is being launched to day, But like most of you, I can't afford one now, I will have one eventually, so I watch with anticipation.

There is a live webcast at 1 pm today for the Athlon64 launch, The link for it (must sign up) is at the bottom right of AMD's homepage

well i hate to be a party pooper, but the 64's not that big of a deal. as an wholeheartly supporting AMD type guy, i love the fact that there is a new breed of CPU here, but current P4 and XEON technologies are wiping the floor with it......

Its does not have a true 64bit bus, its just two 32bit buses in parallel.

Still, I'm sure its plenty fast.

I'd definately hold off for a few weeks, maybe months before getting one. Anyways, they don't have Windows XP 64 done yet either. Unless you want to pay a heaping bunch of money now and compile a linux kernel to use it.

Ok, I hate to be with Chrome (merely for the party killing aspect) but folks, cheack out Tom's hardware, a VERY respectected name;

The new 64's, even the $700 are basically just TYING the old P4 3.2's with the new P4 Extreme 3.6 ghz proc's (fresh off the TESTBED< not done yet) kicking all the competition.....

Sorry to dissapoint but AMD's galliant efferot might have been a huge step past the 3200+ but it aint in the same leauge as Intel, and this from someone who has sworn by AMD for the last few years. I am VERY dissapointed. Of course it isnt fair to say that right away but as for initial impression....

Arkangyl - Don't trust Tom's farther than you can throw him. Used to be great, but I don't even trust the temp comparison on heat sinks now. It's more of a sell out than HardOCP. Every other person that I've read the reports from did video encoding tests has found the Clawhammers to spank the Extreme. Well, everyone other than Tom's. And the other bench marks are just more tilted for Intel compared to the three other sites I've read.

Clawhammer in short - Over priced? Yes. Supported so we could see it in TRUE 64 bit action? No... Tom's harsher than Intel bias sites? Yes. Something stinks.
