In more local country if a police guy pulls you over he generally only ever askes for your driving liscence. However in virtually every American pullover - arrest from a car/truck, film, tv, police camera you name it, your asked not only for a liscence but a registration as well.

A question - as a bit of a lost cause Brit - whats a registration and what does it look like?

In the states here..........the registration is proof that you have valid License Plates to that particular vehicle. You get the new registration and license plates or decals after you purchase the vehicle at a local DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles......unless your from Michigan, then it's called the Secretary of State) Now, in some states it's required that the vehicle go through a saftey inspection or an emissions test prior to getting a renewed registration and license plates. The registration is a small official form that has your current Name, address, the make and VIN of that vehicle, license plate # and the valid year of the plates /decals. All states also now require proof of vehicle insurance as well prior to issuance of the registration.

They are usually checked to ensure that it isn't a stolen or otherwise illegal vehicle.

What makes you say that? Personally, I drink tea almost every day (not at tea time, mind you) and try to make it anywhere around the south east of the country without being offered tea.

Yah man it rocks, I like raspberry also but my fav is the blueberry, China Town (Wal-Mart) has it.

Yeah and dont find out your registration is expired when the highway state patrol lady says "This registration is expired, did you know it was expired?" Yeah I look at the expiration date on that thing every time I get into my car....
