![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Well today my mother called me . The nursing home called and my grandmother is on 24 hour watch. She's suffered from alzhiemers for years, and there's really nothing of her mind left. And nothing left to be done, her body is slowly shutting down. I know I should feel sad,but the truth is i'm relieved. She's been imprisoned inside herself for so long, unable to even do the most basic simplest things. Her mind left her long ago... So different than the women that I knew when I was younger. Born in northern Italy in 1908 her family immigrated to America when she was around 8 ,and lived as farmers in upper Michagan. Eventually after meeting my granfather, a huge hungarian golden gloves ranked boxer, they were married and settled in the Chicago area. She was a "devote" Roman Catholic,a nurse ,and red cross volunteer for most of her life. For many years after retierment she donated her time to work with the handicaped and disabled. Allways giving and asking nothing in return. After my granfather passed she was strong, the hub of the family, though I know she was decimated by his death so young (54). She was strength when you needed it ,and sharp criticizm when you deserved it. There were no grey areas in her life . Only right and wrong ,and you'd better be right or she'd let you know !!! With her passing the world is diminished a bit,as is with the passing of all good people. But I know her journey is almost over . And if there is a heaven, as she so firmly believed ,she'll be there soon. She and my grandfather, holding hands and laughing, together for ever...at peace. God speed Gramma. .

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I had a simular situation with my grandfather, when he died, I was sad, but in a way happy for him. He had Parkinson's and alzhiemers. At times when I saw him he would be kinda weird, or totaly lucid. One time, during a nice talk with my grandfather, during one of his 'good' times, he asked it I still had his 30-30 rifle. I said yes, and he asked me to bring it to him with one round. I told him I could not do that, and he hung his his head and said I know. He died about a year later. Alzhiemers is a horrible disease. My thoughts, for what they are worth, are with you. Eric

![]() ![]() | I had a similar thing with my Aunt. A cancer survivor for 38 years of her life, battling 3 different types of cancer, I think 6 different times in her life. Lung cancer finally got the best of her. She did smoke, but quit in her mid 20's I believe. May nothing buy merry memories cherish your mind.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | If you do believe in heaven then you should see that where she is going she'll finally be reunited again with her late husband. I don't believe in heaven, but if you do then that point of view should help. |

| Mastah Overclocker | I too have had to deal with loosing family members including my parents, and it never gets any easier. You did the best thing you can do...share cherished memories, and let others help you with your burden, I found out the hard way bottling it up inside is the wrong way. The one thing that gave me peace after my father passed came from one of his closest friends. "As long as you are still alive, so are they....your experiences together will forever be with you, and as long as you take time out to remember and share them, they will still exist" She sounded like a great woman who has had a significant influence in your life, now that you have shared that with us, she has become part of my life too.

| Mutant Moderator | I am happy for her, as she is no longer suffering through this. I am sad for you, as it is those that are left behind who grieve their loss. Take solace in knowing that she is no longer suffering. She definately sounded like she was a very giving person and one who had a love for others.
