I.B.M. to Expand Use of Chips From AMD

	Advanced Micro Devices, the chip maker locked in a David-and-Goliath rivalry with Intel, won a strong endorsement yesterday from I.B.M. that should give A.M.D. a further lift in the corporate computer market. I.B.M. said it would offer five models of computers powered by A.M.D.Ã‚â€™s Opteron microprocessor intended for use in corporate data centers for mainstream business tasks. Previously, I.B.M. used Advanced Micro chips only for high-performance, scientific computing. The I.B.M. nod is the latest in a string of successes for A.M.D. Its market share is rising both in corporate server computers and in personal computers. I.B.M., Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems and even Dell have signed on to use its chips. The Dell announcement in May that it would use Opteron chips in some of its server computers was a striking break with its Intel-only tradition.
