OK, to me, thats a damn nice laptop, it has the power to be a midrange gaming system. Nie cpu, good video card, plenty of ram, nice sized hard drive. I'd love to have it.

Agreed. That's about 4X the laptop I own, and I get plenty of use out of mine. Sweet lappy Dark.

IMO, a laptop is only required to be an extension of your desktop...unless your needs are so small that even a desktop is overkill. Investing in a laptop that can truly replace a desktop system is a losing proposition, financially speaking.

It's a nice laptop.

The only thing that I see wrong with it is the 4200 RPM hard drive. It's going to be slow as hell.

If you really want to do gaming on that, consider selling the 120 GB hard drive and buying a 5400 RPM hard drive or a 7200 RPM hard drive of a smaller size.

That video card is integrated. It will use less power than an add on video card, but it will drain resources from the system. It won't be a problem so long as you don't plan on doing much gaming on it.

Besides those two things, I would say you have a nice laptop.

Well you cant really upgrade the video card, your pretty much stuck with the x700, but you can upgrade the ram and hdd.

how good are the x700's? ive heard good and bad ive usully used nvidia so im going with ati in this bad boy...

it should be able to hand source if i dumb down the graphics to dx 8.1 or 8.0 and run em low, on our old system a 9600 pro ran source just fine on dx 8.1 so this card should do better

Not quite true. Laptops may be more than desktops, but they actually hold their value much better.

A 4200rpm laptop drive isn't actually as slow as it sounds. Because of the small capacity of the drives, areal density is generally very high. If you're a heavy gamer or photo editor, I'd recommend getting a 7200rpm drive but it isn't actually a huge issue.

It isn't integrated...it's a mobility X700.

Reza has a lappie with an X700 and he's been pretty happy with it. He can play FEAR on medium-high settings at middle resolutions, and the card has a lot of headroom for overclocking with ATi tool. Anyways, if you have any specific questions about the card I suggest you contact him, he's been fiddling with it for about 6 months now.

Hope this helps.

Overclocking in a laptop is like playing CS:S in the oven... not a good idea. The laptop looks ok but then again it is an acer, the company that like dell uses parts that are not exactly high performance. I know this because I have worked on them. Treat her well and Im sure she will do the same.

I know of a lot of people at www.notebookforums.com who've put large overclocks on their laptop GPUs, hell, even their CPUs themselves and had no problems whatsoever; and all with standard PSUs and (mostly) standard cooling. Personally I've managed a 3dMark stable 200mhz on the memory of my old Go 6800 Ultra and current Go 7800GTX and they'll both take at least 70mhz on the core.

Obviously the risks are higher with a laptop due to the restricted cooling and power, but then the parts are much lower power/heat output than the desktop equivalents so you've got more headroom than you'd think.

It's definitely worth a shot as long as you're careful. Cards these days throttle down if they get too hot, so risk of permanent heat damage to the core is pretty low.

I got the same laptop but the sempron version. If you plan on using it for more than 45 minutes off the battery you should order a large capacity battery. Life on the oem one sucks. The lcd on mine died just 2 weeks after getting it but acer has great customer service.
