| just wonderin if any of you guys know the details or know where i could find the details of the current KaZaa restrictions.... I know they (is it just in Missouri or nationwide?) recently passed a law that prohibited "sharing music online". I want to know if you can still LEGALLY download music from someone who is ILLEGALLY sharing, and also if this JUST pertains to music and no other file types.... (for example are documents and MP3s of...say, Roy D. Mercer considered part of the illegal stuff to share?) just lookin for loopholes and tecnicalities to utilize THANKS Wolf | ||

| I just read a CRS (Congressional Research Service) report on this (i work in a congressional office) It is now officially illegal to download music that has been copyrighted and liceneced. It is still ok to download music that is distributed under no licence and with no copyright! | ||

| It has always been illegal to download music and software and movies... unless you own them already or have payed for them..... or unless they are under the General Public use liecence. Same thing goes with books as welll.. you cant download the text of a book or reporduce it with out permission... an expemtion for this law is anything that has been put under the public domain..... IE ... many of the older books (circa 1920 or eailer) have been part of the public domain and you can read and download or whatever.. (hence the Gutenberg Project) Same thing applys with movies and music and software....if it isnt under the public domain you cant have it without paying the owner ![]() | ||

| Thats iffy there jclarkys..... Most of the Actual MUSIC.... meaning the sheet music... the liturature is indeed public domain... but when you get down to the actully PERFORMANCES... well those are owned by the individual performer ... or group... so those are not public domain(unless the artist wants them to be http://www.classicalarchives.com/main/b.html <--there is good example... (thought there all in MIDI LOL) | ||

| You know it will be interesting to see how this affects the music industry. I would like to see if they (the artists mainly) will see any significant increase in sales or will it be the same or maybe lower. If it stays the same or lower then all that time, effort, and money was wasted with no results. | ||
