Question Anyone have this, CoolIT Systems Chiller

i thought this was cool so I been thinking of getting one of these and was wondering if anyone had one, my question about this is i know it plugs into any usb, but was wondering is there a way to not just have it hook to a computer, since the computer needs to stay on so it will continue to keep your drink cold, does anyone know do they make a 12 volt power usb so i could say hook it up next to the bed while i watch tv, or is there something else out there that has a way to keep my drinks cold.

So you want to have a power adapter that goes into the wall right? Assuming you want to cut into the cord, just get a 12V Wall wart capable of supplying the needed current. Or use a 5V one, which would probably be cheaper (since these things are abundant ).

If you dont want to cut into the cord, buy a female (the one that plugs into that one..lol) and cut one end off. The 2 leads you are concered about is the Black (-) and Red(+). I wouldnt worry about the other 2, unless the thing comes with software to control it O.o

5VDC/4A
$8.49

5V/3A
$4.95

EDIT-ok now Im done, you may read and reply

Im very sure that USB devices run on 5V from the system. Perhapse you could grab a 5V DC power supply and either mod a plug into the chiller or mod a USB type connector to the power supply.
Looks like a fun... thing...
my vocabulary is very... big.
It would probably be more effective if there was an insulating sleve type sleve wrapped around the drink.

Find an old (or no-name) iPod power adapter. 5v with a USB plug.

Thanks Cyno01, i will see if i can find some thing that works i have not ordered it let, i was just wondering if anyone would have had one and what there opinion on it would have been, although it says to plug it into a usb on your computer to get power to run it full time, i was just looking for a alternative way to get power to it instead of using my computer. Such as a wall socket for a power source.
Do you think yourself it would be worth buying or just a waste of money.

It'll keep a can of soda colder longer, but dont expect it to chill down a room temp can, or cool anything not in a can real well. But if you want one, go for it. I love USB gadgets, i've got fans, lights, mousepads, hell i have a USB dance light!

Ok that is cool Cyno01, so if i had a 12 pack already chilling in the fridge and took one out it should keep it at the temp it was when it came out of the fridge.

Thanks Nerdz, for the link on what part i would need.

I Think it would be worth Buying. Now if y ou want to get a bit more complex (yet stay simple) You could use a switch to switch between the 2. Use a SPDT switch, and have ground as a common connection. Switches are pretty cheap, and you can get (or build) a small box (or even mod it into one of the PSU's or the cooler unit itself) to house it in. If you plan to go along with this idea, I can provide a schematic. Just let me know and I'll post.

Thanks Nerdz, i just found a really good article on it saying it is not worth buying it , to bad i was willing to give it a try out, but after reading the article on it you will see why it is not worth buying.

Here is the full article on it for everyone to checkout before they think of buying it.

Again Thanks to you Nerdz for your help.

And also Thanks to Cyno01 for his help to.

No problem. I have seen pelt drink coolers that worked, but they were usually integrated into the cup itself for better heat transfer. And ran at more than 5v.

In fact, heres a link to the project. It would be cool if, like in that review, the plate on the bottom was convex and matching the curviture of a can bottom for better contact so it would cool down the whole can.

That article does raise a good Point, but what if you had a metal cylinder to actually hold the cup too (I forgot what they are called)

edit- Cyno beat me to it, I couldnt find that link. But ya, if you could get that metal cup holder, Im sure it would work better.

You get 12V DC out of a cig lighter, which is Plenty enough to cool a drink. You also have a large amount of current at your disposal too, around 60+Amps.
