The boy was taken to the hospital with second- and third-degree burns on his legs. Police were called to the hospital to investigate the incident and later learned that the 17-year-old spilled gas on his pants while siphoning gas. He then used a lighter to try to determine how wet his pants were and set himself of fire, Hague said.

Both boys have been ticketed with larceny, Hauge said.

Too stupid for words.

sounds like he was plenty stupid enough. he just got very very lucky. it happens in nature too.

ah well, maybe he'll actually learn from his stupidity, and go on to become a productive member of society. somehow I doubt it tho. my g/f's son burnt his leg BAD last summer with fireworks. you'd think that'd be enough to keep him away from fire.

nope. last month we were burning trash, and he threw a spray paint can in the fire when no one was around. him and his cousin were standing right next to it. I was here at the computer and heard a big *BOOM!* Ran outside and they were both screaming. g/f's son got 1st degree burns on his face. his cousin got 2nd degree on his face and neck, and had to go to the emergency room and get scrubbed.

the bad part about it is, the little dumbass will probably not learn from it, because he didn't get burned as bad. I asked him what possessed him to do that.

"The can was empty! I hit it with a shovel and nothing happened, so I thought it was safe."
*shakes head*

This is the same kid who refuses to wear shoes around the house, and loves to break glass bottles all over the yard. anything glass. i told him i'm going to just laugh and laugh when he cuts his foot wide open.

You're not kidding. He's 13 and already smoking. I've tried everything short of beating him to stop him. Taken away his bike, satellite, made him clean til bedtime for days. Nothing works. He'll straighten up for a few days, then it's back to stealing the butts out of our ashtrays, or he gets them out of ashtrays in front of the local stores. I'll never understand.

Ah well. maybe I do just need to start spanking him. lol

yeah... i love the darwin awards.... aka the stella awards... (they have an emailing list, and they send you updates.... for free!! http://www.stellaawards.com/ scroll to the bottom of page)

one of my favorties.. is from a special person out here in seattle.... he decided that the lava lamp took to long to heat up.... so he decided to turn on his stove and heat it up that way... well the lamp exploded and the flying glass killed him...

Not to be preachy, but perhaps if he saw that you weren't smoking the lesson would take.

Personally, I always found it difficult to listen to my parents when the gist of the message was "do what I tell you to do, not what I do."

And blowing things up will never stop being cool...

in my defense, i've been trying to quit for 2 years now, and my g/f has been trying for almost as long. Very hard tho. We've tried to convey that to him. Hell, my g/f's last boyfriend died of cancer, and the boy idolized him. It still doesn't sink in for him. I can understand, somewhat. I was a teen once. Just drives me crazy that kids won't listen to wisdom and experience (just like I wouldn't. lol) Starting to understand why my parents were always so frustrated with me.

But still, A bad burn would have taught me to stay away from fire, and I was smart enough to know that if I ran around barefoot, breaking glass all over my own yard wasn't a smart idea.
