Default Laptop Advice

Hey pimps, it's been a while, and it will be again. I've noticed you aren't going by the old name and that's a shame, but I figured you are still the best tech site out there so I thought I'd throw my question out to you guys. ;-)

I just took a contract in Alaska and will be moving there in under a month. I want to get a laptop first since my shiney new Athlon 64x2 won't be able to come  but I am rather picky about something that most review sites don't find important. I need to have a standard-ish keyboard with an independant built-in numberpad like a normal desktop keyboard has. I use the number pad all the time and this function-key BS that a lot of laptops have just won't cut it. I haven't seen a site that lets you search by that "feature" but I have seen a few here and there. So please, if you know of a brand that sports the full keyboard and numberpad, who are they? Is there a term for that to search for that I am no thinking of? I know I have seen it on a Toshiba and an HP at least, but certainly not all of either make.

I would like to keep the price-tag around/under $1k as well but I am a little more flexible on that criterium.

Thanks for the help.

omg. dude, just get a dell! they're so good you can actually buy one with a super fast intel celeron processor! none of that amd crap! and if you're lucky, you might even be able to find one with integrated graphics!

On the non-April Fools side of things, Dell really does have great laptops. They have the lowest prices I've seen and you can get some great configurations, including ones with a dedicated video card.

Every once and a while Dell will have some major laptop discounts, like $750 off a $1500 laptop for example. Look around techbargains.com until such a deal comes up.

Sit doown, and shutup. Dell isn't exactly the best. I can build the same lappy at Hp for 1900, and get the same one at Toshiba for 2300, but Dell woudl cost we 3300 alone for just the damn lappy. PLus, his is looking for full-size keyboard. Noob

Heres a link I found googling:

Linky

Gateway

HP

Basically, any company that sells a 17" lappy comes with a numpad, just make sure and check. DELL DOES NOT SELL A LAPPY WITH A FULL SIZED NUMPAD , but HP, Gateway, and Toshiba. Acer, Sager do.

Well, HP will charge you more shipping than Dell and tax. Dell also has regular sales and discounts that will get you a ton of lappy for the money. I've never seen a $750 of $1500 coupon from HP.

Just one more thing to carry around and lose. As I said, I use it all the time so there wouldn't be a point to getting it seperate.

I saw an cer in Circiut City that had one and astually looked decent and that is what I was thinking as well. I have a laptop next to me that is a P1 120 from Acder and still runs like a champ, not a single issue with it beyond the obvious "Can't run anything newer than DOS" ones. If it can last that long I don't imagine they have gone downhill too far in this short of a time.

I'll keep an eye out for 17" screens. Thanks a lot

Look on newegg for their thinkpads. They have some under 1k and Im pretty sure they have a full size keyboard. Rugged yet powerful.

I was looking at CircuitCity, and they have this Toshiba.
It has all the goodies you want such as a new Intel processor, 1gb of RAM, Harmon Kardon speakers, DVD burner, and a 17" screen.

I guess THRASHER2 can help you alot better with this.

I have seen them in USB and they were recommended earlier, but for something I use very regularly it would be an aggrivation to always have to make sure I have it on hand, make sure I don't lose it, break it, etc. With something used this often I would prefer to have it integral. To me, having an "external" numberpad would be like having an external power switch [that was lame but I couldn't think of anything else.. it's 5AM, gimme a break ] it's almost crucial and it's just asking to get lost or damaged.

Thaks for the thought though
