Default I met my idol!

Yeah so definatley not PC related but it made my year so I have to tell someone...

I met my idol last night. Victor Wooten, greatest bass player alive. Plays so fast and with such great tone while playing at lightspeed its absolutely unreal. I met him and the rest of the Flecktones at the Ausitn Bela Fleck and the Flecktones concert last night. It was completley bada$$. After the concert was over, these multiple grammy winning superstars just came down and hung out with random people in the audience. What other band would do that? I have so much respect for them for taking the time out for their fans, and it is something I will never forget. Without further adu, here is a crappy cell phone pic (didnt bring a camera, didnt figure I would get to meet vic lol) of me and the greatest electric bass guitar player on earth

Nah Flea is probably a better bass player.

But I agree that it was nice of those band members to chat with the audience. You don't see that often.

Good for you that you met your idol.

Oh man! I totally agree!

I met him after he played with mike stern here in seattle. Definately the best bassist in the world though...flea is my favorite for attitude and general crazyiness (such as playing an entire hour long rhcp set completely nude! ) , but Wooten is tops in terms of skill...he plays much more complex stuff than flea does, musically speaking (not just in terms of speed) You're right though, it is cool that those guys actually mingle with their fans...im sure it was as cool for you as it was for me Nice choice of idols by the way (+ rep)

Oh no he didn't He did not mess with Flea!
Flea is not only crazy and spontaneous, but also a great bass player. He has alot of talent with the bass.

I've never heard of this Wooten character, but I'm sure he is a great bass player. I'll try to buy a CD and hear his stuff.

i love flea dont get me wrong, but wooten plays at least twice as fast and more musically complex

im the one on the right. sorry the pic sucks so much

By the way, if youre gonna get a wooten cd, get "A Show of Hands". i dont like his new "Soul Circus" nearly as much... but a show of hands is an amazing display of bass talent

Hi . . . yeah . . . you're "on crack". (Alright, unnecessary flame is now over, back to rational mode)

Granted, Flea is an AWESOME Bass player, BUT (<-----amplified 1000%)

Victor Wooten is THE GOD of Bass. (I understand this is a discussion involving opinion so I don't really think I'm right, but . . . I AM ) PERIOD, bottom-line.

I went to the University of Richmond from 1994 - 1997 and my Jazz combo instructor grew up with Victor and his brother Future-Man (Roy Wooten). Not that that fact contributes in any way to my argument for Victor being the BEST BASS PLAYER. Just a nugget o' info.

Congratulations on meeting Victor!!

I used to listen to a lot of Jeff Beck just because I loved the bass runs.

Heh, Podman, I would have taken you for a Myung fan...Atleast I'm sure you think Petrucci is great and Portnoy is best (consecutive awards would attest)

Yep yep, agreed. Im realitively new to the bass (about a year... but thanks to ebay i play a fretless warwick corvette ), but i am a classicly trained musician (8 years so far, tenor and bass trombones) and i can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that wooten is a better bassist. Now am i saying that flea isnt talented? Hell no! i love flea. his basslines are infectious and he is certainly one of the best bassists around in the rock world. But wooten, i would say, is on a another plane of existance. The more i learn about music theory, the more wooten is shown to be absolutely incredible. Listen to the song "Classical Thump" (off of "A Show of Hands") No, its not crazy like flea's stuff, but it is much more musical. If you want to defend to the death your favorite bassist, thats fine with me, but trust me wooten is the greater...look no further (and please please dont write "THIS MUSIC IS SLOW WHERE IS FAST AND LOUD?!?!?" im a die hard metal head most of the time, but there is so much more to music than rock and roll...)

oh sorry i left my computer a bit so i was actually relpying to harigan with my yep yep. I do enjoy john myungs bass playing (and petrucci is my favorite guitarist, and portnoy is up there for drums...dave weckl is on the top of that list though), but he is far from my favorite. I would probably say my top three are Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, and Flea.

Wow that Wooten dude is some bass player isn't he. He is amazing at the bass and I have to admit that. I don't know, but I guess it's the different styles you prefer. For Victor Wooten, I would listen to his bass on a warm summer day under a tree, while with Flea, I would listen to his bass when I am jumping crazy on my couch and breaking stuff. No doubt Wooten has talent and I'll be looking forward to buying a CD. + Rep Pod_man for the great video.

Nah bro, sometimes you just have to admit when you're wrong. This wasn't a bad thing of course as I've learned the name of a great bass player. I'm going to go to the local CD shop tomorrow and see what I can dig up. That's great that you and 4rm4g3dd0n were able to meet him. I hope I meet him and Flea someday.

I have an employee , 26 years old, who is fairly well rounded in musical tastes. So I mentioned Jeff Beck one day and he looked at me with a blank expression.

Getting old...........................
