Default really bad service

ok today at comp usa i was looking for a new, cheap, low wat psu , so i decided to take a look at what that had for proccessors, i was looking at them, then some guy comes up with an person who works there, and he says he is looking for this type of proccessor( 754) and the guy who worked there pointed to a 939 athalon, theguy who worked there went to get the key to open the case when i stepped in and what he was looking for, well he showed me a sheet of paper, on the paper was the specs of his mobo(754, ect ect) and i told him that the Cpu he was looking at was not the right type, "BUt the guy said this will work" he said so i told him to look really close at what socket the MObo was and look at the socket of the cpu, he did and he goes, thats socket 939, i way "yah it wont work, there arnt any 754 sockets here, go online and order it off there, so the guy looked really mad and when the guy got back, you kno what he found, Me laughing and the guy steaming towwards his manager, its either he is really dumb, dosnt know anything about computers or that he dosnt care about the people,.Im never going to trust anyone from there agian... so i feel really good after that, =]...its always good to help out a fellow geek.

Glad you pointed him in the right direction. It is always nice to help someone who is either being misinformed by a clerk or jsut cant get a straight answer.

I was at a big electronics place the other day and this older woman (around 50-55) asked if this memory would work in her computer. All of a sudden the clerk goes into the LONGEST explination of the history of memory. I mean, this guy must have just got done reading a history book of memory. I am sitting here listening in a little and snickering to myself. After about 10 minutes of his explination he was finally getting to the use of DDR. The woman intterupts him and asks "So, will this work", the guy looks at her information, looks at the memory and simply replies with "No". He turns around and walks off. I went over took a look at her sheet of paper pointed to some that would work in her price range.

I went to crap Usa once looking at video cards .
One of the tech's asked to help so i told him I wanted the 6800gt vid card that was on sale.

He says wait a minute ive got just what you need and returns holding an Ati 9250.
when I asked where was the 6800gt he replied"it's sold out" but this 9250 is a better deal ,he's got one ,and it plays cards and tetris just fine

Talking From the other side...

Having worked for Best Buy, I know I was clueless about half the stuff there. Best Buy's solution is to do the online training ON YOUR OWN TIME. Dude, if I wasn't at the store I was sleeping!

But at least I had the integrity to say "I don't know". Some guy came in with a stick of memory and went "Is this CAS-2 or CAS-3?"
I says "I have no idea what your talking about"
He goes "Is the memory timing CAs-2 or CAS-3?"
I says "I have no idea"
Then he had me read some tiny print on the chip for him indicating it was CAS-2 and he walks off, I'm sure feeling vastly superior to a Best Buy tech.

i have been on both sides too...

when i worked at best buy... i was a tech... but i was good at sales... so i got tech pay to sit around and sell crap all day... the sales people know enough to explain the basics and thats about it... hell two of the pepople in sales i worked with there last job was car sales... and go figure they were good at selling computers... i was the geek that got called when techie questions got asked... yeah i know weird.. a techie with socal skills =)

and i have been in the other shoes... last year i went to get half life 2.... i bought it from frys... i couldnt find it on the shelf... and i made the mistake of asking for help. the sales person wanted to make sure that my computer could run the game since once opened it cant be returned.. i told him my computer should be able to run it fine... then he asked are you sure it is? what kind of processor are you running? i told him a dual opteron 246's. i got told that this game needed a pentium 4 or an athlon processor in order to run it, and that my current hardware was "too slow" he then tried to show me a cpu / mb combo that would work.. i told him i would take the risk... and took the game and left....

oy!

What about internet phone support "techs"? About 4 years ago I signed up for cable internet (because DSL wasn't available in my area, I swear by DSL because at least you're guaranteed a certain download speed and not affected by peak hours)...anyway, when the cable tech was installing the modem, he dropped it. Well, he hooked it up anyway, tested it on their own FTP server and it seemed to be downloading at a decent rate.

Well a few days later I got setup to play Quake 2 multiplayer, on a computer with a Duron 800 running at 980 MHz, and a Geforce 3. (I'd previously played Q1 and Q2 on a Celeron 300 @ 450 MHz with a Riva TNT2 and 33.6 dialup.) Anyway, within minutes of joining any game server, I'd get the "phone jack disconnect" icon that usually means you're dropping data packets. This happens sometimes with some servers, but not ALL servers.

I did some tracerts and got Ping Plotter (www.pingplotter.com) to confirm I was dropping up to 66% of my packets at the first hop after my own IP address (i.e. the cable modem). So I figured something was fubar with the modem, and called tech support.

After I explained the problem in great detail, the rather argumentative tech began asking what processor I had. I said I was running at almost 1 GHz so that didn't matter for shat. I was then stunned when he asked me what video card I had! I said to him, "What the hell does my VIDEO CARD have to do with my INTERNET SPEED?!" And even more amazingly, I was shocked when he told me that my computer wasn't good enough for internet games! Even after I told him I was playing the SAME GAMES 2 years before on a computer 1/3 as fast on a goddam DIALUP connection!!

Talk about stupid, there's a lot of "techs" out there who are the worst insult to our kind.

So what is the resolution? The conclusion? Did the problem get fixed? Did you change to DSL?
So many unanswered questions.

I very much enjoy going to CompUSA and shopping there. I bought this excellent Norton Ghost/AntiVirus combo for less than half of the original price. Go CompUSA!!!

I had no other option for high speed internet as cable was the only offering at that time, in my neighborhood. However, 6 months later when DSL was available, I jumped ship.

For the record, I had to call back and ask for the first moron's supervisor, whom I emailed all my data (tracert and pings and pingplotter graphs showing the major packet loss). He apologized for his "technician"'s support and within a week I was sent a new modem. Amazingly, the problems immediately vanished!

Still, the episode left a bad taste in my mouth and I went to DSL from the moment my contract ended. I didn't have a problem for the 3 years after that.

lolololol i went back there 2day, didnt see the guy, but i did manage to see this "unbelivable" price for a 5500 i think, the tag said 40$!, so i knew this was to good 2 b true, so i took it up to the service counter and asked what the price was, Guess how much! 100$!$!$!$ , so i was like the tag said 40, then the guy said well we labeled the wrong card....

so after looking at the vid cards(horrible organization and price) i got fed up with it and got the manager...

i told him about the problem and he was like we will take care of it and i will make sure everthing is right..

so i am going back 2mro or sat to see if there is more organization,..

THE FUNNY thing is that the whole other part of the store is good, x-cept the computer and accessories..lmao that the only reason i shop there

That is great news. I currently have DSL and Verizon tech support is top notch. I could have gotten Road Runner or Optimum Online, but I am not a speed demon. At least the new modem worked for you. Oddly for me, whenever there is heavy rain outside or heavy snow, rarely but sometimes my DSL won't work. It doesn't bother me that much because it lasts for about 30 minutes max.

Oh and Stevey, you must have alot of time on your hands to check up on CompUSA.

Thats more likely a line problem and not your problem. Call the phone company and complain
