Default I now officially HATE maxtor.

I had 2 more maxtor drives die this weekend! One was a replacement from maxtor for a dead drive, the other is from office deho. Lets see, one was made in Feb 05, the other is from Oct 04, so no warranty on it.

I am going to call maxtor Monday and see what they say. I do not think it will do any good, but now 8 or so maxtor drives have died at my job and home computers.

All the drives were the 1 year warranty type. But still, that is bad! And when I say a dead drive, it will not boot, and the maxblast software will not detect the drive, so I think they are dead.

Well, live and learn, and think nice thoughts about WD and Seagate...

I've never had a problem with Maxtor hard-drives.. I got a old 15Gig, and it runs like a champ.

My condolences, and I agree that Maxtor drives suck.

My brother's computer died do to a Maxtor, and it took Seagate's Data Recovery Service to get his data back.

WD is good, but my brother's post-Maxtor RAID 1 array made up of 2 WD SATA drives was busted up due to 1 of the drives crapping out. WD's RMA department sent us a replacement before we sent the unit to them, now that's customer service.

Seagate is great, except their SATA connections are less thought out than WD's.

I would take a look at some Samsung hard drives. They are quiet, fast, and very reliable from what i've seen. They just FEEL solid. I put a 160GB Spinpoint drive in my parents computer, and it is impressive.

The odd thing to me, is the old maxtor drives still work... I have 2 of my borgs up on some really old maxtor drives. One is 6 years old or so, the other is a scavenged thing that by the numbers I traced to maxtor, quantum fireball I think.

I still hate maxtor...

I think that their old stuff is good, just like old WD stuff is good. For NEW stuff, Samsung and Hitachi are your best bet.

from what i have seen from maxtor, they have a higher failure rate when one of these 2 condtions are met... I am speaking of ide maxtors only

1. they are put in a raid formation

2 they have little or no cooling on them

Maxtor = Quantum which then = teh ghey!

I stand by Western Digital and Seagate. There HDD's are probably the best ones I have ever had.

It is funny you mention that. I am taking an A+ class, and our equipment is well, not up to date. I decided this weekend that I would try some RAID stuff this weekend with my 2 80G IDE drives that passed scandisk.

RAID 1 worked out great! My computer 'seemed' to boot a little faster. RAID 0 was great! Well, untill drive 2 died, then drive 1 installed windows, then died soon after...

I think maxtor drives just hate the future, so they kill themselves.
