It's Official, I'm gonna be leaving....

I've signed up to deploy for Iraq and I'm scheduled to leave in February. It's a 6 month deployment (for now). Anyone who is in or was in the miltary, help me think of all the stuff I should bring. I can't bring nudie mags or alcohol though.

Never been in the military, but I've been to a few rock festivals & bike rallies that have had an uncanny resemblence to some of the bigger WW1 battles ... you can cope with a lot if you've got enough spare pairs of boxers & socks, TP & wet wipes ...

....you will be able to get all you need at the PX, so if you forget anything you were issued you are covered. The one thing that my boy was glad to take was his MP3 player and batteries. Never leave home without your tunes.

Stay safe out there man. Take some audiobooks on that mp3 player. Get a laptop if you don't already have one for some gaming and stuff. I always used to keep a sketchbook with me when I was in the military, even if you suck at drawing it's something to pass the time.

A small shortwave radio, a swiss army knife (preferrably one of those zillion in one models), foldable pocket mirror, tiny red LED light and, of course a Zippo! Oh yes... and I always stuck rolls of toilet paper between my innner/outher helmet.... I HATE having to take a dump without them!

From my last two deployments i found that a jumpdrive, psp, and some good books can really make the time go by. Also dont forget to get a good camel back. The ones the military supply are garbage, get your own and bring some cleaning utensils for it. Also pick up some of those scented stick up things.....we all have a pretty good idea how sweet the berthings can start smelling. Last but not least some kind of foot powder, boondocks all day can really tear up your feet. Good luck bro, and dont forget to keep your head down. Might be seeing you.

Go to toys r us today and grab some mp3 players and cd players, you could go through a few. They are all half off. Good luck man.

If you get an MP3 player, make sure you get a water-proof case/covering for it. Lest a tank should run it over.

EDIT: Get a BlackBerry if you have the $$$. They're pretty cheap on Ebay. But, then, not sure about the coverage on it for where you're gonna be.
