AMD Shoots for Quad Cores

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is planning for quads.

The Sunnyvale, Calif., chip maker is aiming to roll out a quad-core-capable processor family during 2007 and switch to an all-new processor architecture later this decade.

The quad-capable family will result in a wide range of four core processors, including offerings for desktops, notebooks and one for servers that can fit into machines with as many as 32 processors, AMD executives said in a meeting for analysts.

AMD aims to use its ability to step up on processor cores in 2007, along with its move to a new processor architecture around 2008 or 2009 as a means to meet its goals of maintaining what it sees as a technical lead over Intel Corp., its larger rival, while fostering a grow rate that's at least two-times the market average, company executives said in a meeting for analysts on Tuesday.

As one way of growing, AMD aims to double the number of computer platforms available from top-tier manufacturers that use its chips.

It hopes to use its Opteron chip's recent wins in rack-mount servers to gain more acceptance in areas such as blade servers, corporate desktops and business notebooks, over time, executives explained at the meeting.

"People that can trust us for their server technology can trust us for their client technology," said Henri Richard, AMD's chief sales and marketing officer, in his presentation to analysts.

I was thinking of giving myself an Alienware laptop for Xmas, but I can't decide if the AMD 64 X2 dual core is better than Pentium 4 3.8 for gaming...or would it really matter at that speed of CPU?

And to drag up the proverbial question, is the AMD 64 4000+ laptop better for gaming than a Pentium 4 3.6GHz? Are there some performance charts out there that people have bookmarked?

Exactly how does it blow it out of the water? If I'm going to fork out the cash...I was just wanting to know the geek details about the difference in the gaming performance of the processors.

Thanks,
G

I guess it is a bit early to tell... I'm saving up money for a new PC (besides the case, fans, controllers, lighting, dampening, etc.. I already bought, which are part of my current COD project, which is going
to be the basis of my new PC
)....

At the moment my PIV 2,6C and 9800Pro are overclocked to the max and I feel most games still cut it...
Sure I can't enable AA & AF on the most demanding games.... which I run at either 1024*768 or 1280*
1024... but the games still are a lot of fun!

I'd rather save up on the money & buy new hardware in a year when my current hardware can't cope
with it anymore... then, there will be more advanced hardware to buy at lower prices than the 'top
stuff available now....(multicore PC's... 60ns based GPU's)...

I guess I'm a bit conservative & stick to mayor upgrades every 3 years...

Which does not interfere with my case modding hobby... afterall I can sell the cases I mod'
