now go dl the linux version of F@H, read My linux thread (the one with the laptop hardrive probs) to see how to open rpm's in debian.

Or look it up on google.

EDIT: opps, I didnt relize F@H was an exe file for linux...Well just read the install instructions for it, but be sure to log on as root

Note you have to reset the root password

so do

sudo su

passwd root (it will ask you to give a password)

I use Mandriva which is pretty straight forward from a user perspective. The Folding program runs as a process in the background which you won't know it's there.

Install was a snap, and just lookin around at everything , you'll find what yer lookin for quite easy......... go for it. All in all i give it 2

Setup:
Turn Computer on, make sure bios is set for CD first. Insert CD. The rest is easy, and it only asks keyboard layout..

I wouldnt mind a bit Foe, Nerdz is right tho its REALLY quite stupid proof , main thing is makin sure your pc boots from CD FIRST, then just follow the instructions. I'll post a lil' how to though see'n as ya asked an ya gots them purdy fingers an all

I've never tried unbuntu, but last times I've installed Linux (mandrake), one failed due to some amd incompatibility (this was several years ago) and the other had hardware problems with my system, sound card wouldnt work, wireless network wouldn't work.

I've only ever run Mandrake, tried to install Red Hat several times and that sh1t would just not work. I might give it another try sometime if I really feel like punishing myself.

Knoppix is pretty much the same. All you have to do it hit enter once..or well twice (it asks for res, but I just hit enter since it adjusts later on)

note, the graphical system you you use with ubuntu is called Gnome. The other one is called KDE..

and I dont know what the hell the X one is...

Ok, well here's the lowdown on installing Ubuntu. We'll just call it

" REDNECK LINUX 101""

#1 - and MOST important , have a pc you want to run this OS on .

First thing you'll want to do is make sure that you go into BIOS and configure the system to boot from CD. With that put in your Ubuntu install disk BEFORE exiting BIOS, then **in my system** hit F10 to save and exit bios.
Now your system should reboot and then boot from the installed CD that ya allready have in RIGHT

First thing you'll be asked is if you want a standard set-up or server, i used standard

From here is really stright forward, it will go through the standard transfering of files and such, then it will ask **figure of speech, i know yer pc aint asking you nuttin'** for you to choose a language, keyboard set-up i.e. standard english or ??. It will then give you a choice of timezones, and after that it will start to configure and transfer more.

After a bit its gonna start to auto configure your DHCP, if you dont have your system hooked to the internet it will halt its prosess and ask iwhat you'd like to do choose Configure LATER, if it is connected then it will detect this and complete the config without you haveing to do anything.

Next stop,it will ask you for a name, i put in rednecklinux . You can use cap's or symbols, just numbers and letters *lower case*. it will then ask for a password to be entered, then entered again to varify.
Next it will show you what's on the HDD and ask if you want to partition or erase the drive, i installed on a 7gb drive so i eraced the drive and started from scratch, but it does have options for setting up partitions and also RAID.

Ok yer just about home free, here's something i learned just a bit ago that i've never seen a windows install do but it might help ya out. When Ubuntu is done copying files and such it will eject the disk and ask you to remove it and to hit enter after doing so. It will then reboot, BE READY to go into bios and change your boot order so that the HDD is first now, otherwise it will try to boot from CD again and error, asking for your name and PW. If it does this, just shut off the power and boot up to get into bios. The reason i tell you this, and it might just be me ,is that even after i put in my name and pass it kept trying to boot from CD.
That's pretty much it, sorry if my explaination is hard to follow but im really not good at explainin stuff or tryin to explain by typin it out.

Hope some of ya get some use from this, and if ya read this far and actually want to give Ubuntu a tryout give me a haller, I'll burn some copies and shoot ya one each of the install version and the live cd
