Default Christmas a Month Early

After some careful calculation and consideration, HouseHold Six has finally approved my much-longed-after upgrade... As of this post, NewEgg is readying the order for shipping and delivery, and my VISA card has been charged. SHOULD have all the goodies here by the end of the week...

As a bribe, HH6 will be getting a new couch, vacuum cleaner, and dinnerwear (among other things...)once we get to and settle down in our new place in KS. She'll also be getting an upgrade to s939 from s754, and my Dedicated Folder machine will be going to a s754 3200 (out of her machine) from the 3000 inside... But enough about that, I know you want to know about the goodies, right?

Motherboard: DFI LP UT nF4 SLI-DR
Video Cards: EVGA 7800GTX (the N528 models) x 2 (YEEEEEHAW!!!)
Processor: AMD X2 4200 Manchester Core (wanted a 4400, but the price diff put me over the limit)
PSU: PC Power and Cooling 510 SLI-PFC

Granted, some of the parts may or may not be considered "tip-top-of-the-line", but to keep the upgrade under $1800, shipping and all, I think I didn't do too badly there...

Another thing I had to consider was cannibalizing parts from ITR to save some $$$...

2X 74GB Raptors in RAID 0
2x512GB Geil Ultra X (TCCD) RAM
DL DVD Burner
Ultra Fan Commander
Lian Li PC75 case

I know that it makes little sense to ask it now (but since I'm on dial-up at my dad's house), but any thoughts for or against the selections? I may be able to sweet-talk HH6 into a couple sales for the intent of a cheaper upgrade down the road if necessary...

Also, have heard mixed feedback about the DFI mobos supporting X2 cpus straight out of the box. Any word on that one way or the other?

Sounds like a sweet upgrade bro!

Where in Kansas? Riley or Leavenworth. If Leavenworth, you'll have to swing by and see me!

I agree that the Opteron is a good CPU at a great price, but the X2 is also a nice piece of work. You will have quite the primo system when you are done.

Quick clarification: I'm nowhere near being settled in. I am still on "vacation" mode at my parents' house in AL. My razor is suspected of having gone AWOL under duress, and I no longer have the "girlish" figure that I cultivated so carefully over the past 3 years at Ft Wood. In other words, I'm fat, lazy, and nowhere near clean-shaven...

I'll be pulling my next duty station up at Fort Riley, KS. I had threatened BA with stopping by Lansing (?) to find him and snap a couple pics to use as blackmail material, but that fell through... How was Jury Duty, Big Dog? As long as you're not a CO at the prison, Slider, a short road trip should be no problem...

I must admit, I haven't really seen much on the Opterons as far as using them in an s939/SLI machine... Maybe when I get settled up in Manhattan (KS) and get the broadband up and running, I can do some more homework...

I will say this about PR though... I pretty much knew what brands and models I was going to be looking for, and which ones to be avoiding when I went looking for the parts.

Great, I was stationed at RIley when it was the home of The Big Red One! Manhattan is a nice place. I work just down the street from BA, and as a matter of fact, I live 2 blocks from the prison

Good luck with your move. So that is how you kept on passing me up everytime I passed you on the folding program! You are upgrading when you are not even fully online! New definition of wireless is GrandpaNoob!

And with your new hardware, I will still be watching my back!

No worries, Ranger... Just wanted to make sure that everyone understood I had to do this "outside the norm"... Ordering on dial-up was such a pain... (I know, I'm a broadband snob, spoiled rotten, all that jazz)

HH6 finally granted me the day to play and tinker with my new toys ...

Messed things up by forgetting to enable the NVidia RAID setup on the board, and wound up having to reformat and reinstall XP Pro twice... Seems like "X2" is going to be a recurring theme with this one...

But anyhoo, got it all up and running, the Raptors RAIDed to 0, the 7800s SLI'd, and the Zalman 7700 works great on the X2. Aside from the cable management (which I'll be tackling here in a few), all that's left to do is hook it up to a broadband connection once I get to Kansas, and DL/re-install all my apps and proggies and games...

In the meantime, I get to have DT's about waiting for that day to come... Like Christmas in early-to-mid December...

EDIT: I hope so, Ator! You have PM about the trip to FWB...
