| What is it about building your l337 computer skills that make you wanna scream in a crowd "Bow before me, ignorant users of easy operating systems... for I am your king!" I'm still a real n00b with Linux... but as I'm building skill, I'm finding myself wanting to scoff at Windows and Mac users as children of a lesser god... Is there help for me? A copy of "Humility 1.0" or somethin'? Maybe it's just the excitement at learning a whole new O/S (well... new to me)... Maybe I should just become a super villian like in that flash cartoon... ![]() | ||

| Dark, they are superior OSs. The real issue is that the business world is not run by the knowledgable, it's run by the "informed". And the "informed" percieve that these OSs are too difficult to understand for the layman. But they apparently have not been informed that just like in windows, a GUI can be writen to do anything, even to make managing UNIX easy for a noOb. These businesses have only one other real issue that they must deal with, and this is the biggest issue. They are dependant on large numbers of low paid, barely trained workers who have a hard time with computer skills. They are lucky if these low end workers can find there way around the internet and manage Outlook mail. The MS Office suit isn't perfect, often times it isn't even good, but it is somewhat familiar and sometimes that's enough. And you can't make MS write their products for alternative operating systems, at least not without a long drawn out court battle. And they wouldn't work worth a damn anyway, MS would see to that. So, unskilled workforce at the low end means software written to the lowest common denominator, owned by the giant of software dominance, and running on the bloated stinking regurjitated corpse of MS DOS. Have a happy weekend ![]() | ||

| I used to think it was pronounced like Linus from Peanuts too. And Linus Torvalds' name is pronounced "lee-nus". But, I'm pretty sure the OS pronounced 'linn-ucks". I watch a lot of TechTV, and the linux "experts" they have on every now and again say it that way, so that's good enough for me. As for making the user more arrogant, I'd say with it's relatively steep learning curve, it's a more humbling experience in the beginning than anything else(I should know). And if you can actually master it, you deserve to be as big an arrogant a**hole as you want. Dark, you've been using RH 9, a pretty user-friendly distro. Try installing/configuring something like Slackware or Gentoo for a quick dose of humility ![]() | ||

| Violent... I'm working on downloading Gentoo (I ended up accidently killing it once, then I had to run a restart for some changes I made, so I ended up losing it AGAIN)... I'm workin on it... Besides... I didn't say I wasn't a n00b at Linux... just sayin' I'm feelin' like I've hit the next level... like Windows was like practice for the real deal... ![]() Add: I know the joys of trying to configure tough crap... I have a copy of both Mandrake and Red Hat like 4.0... I tried for 10 hours to get them to even RUN with my new hardware... If it wasn't for the fact my 586 runs all my old DOS stuff, that crap'd probably load on it... Anyway... I also ended up blowing up Red Hat 7.2 when I tried compiling my kernel (probably didn't help I tried to manual edit a device driver before hand...), I blew my audio drivers the first time I tried installing the Audigy updates... Believe me... I know how much further I have to go. | ||

| I think you should hurry up & get good at this stuff so you can be the official PR Linux guru . I'm a total n00b right now (been ****ing around w/ it on and off since about December and can barely get half my programs installed let alone do anything difficult), but have a dedicated linux box (for now)so I can learn. And I bet there's a bunch of other pimps who'd like to learn also. You could do some tutorials for the dojo, or we could even have a dedicated linux area in the forums if there's enough interest. | ||

| Alright, here is what I think if anyone is intrested: Today I tried linux, red hat to be exact. I was not impressed. I was using linux 9.0. While trying to update it, it crashed 3 times. Had to do manual reboot as no way of exiting. It is a slow operating system. I am very quick with my mouse and with skimming. Linux slowed me down a bit. The incompability with some applications, games, and others just makes me think of linux as pure garbage for a person like me. A person who has multiple applications running, with pure stability, and the ability to play any game when i feel like it. With linux, I had to search and search for compatable programs to run and even then, it required that I enter code to set it up correctly. People who denounce windows are true idiots. Let me see your operating system that shows reliability, stability, and the options to do anything that comes to mind. Do not get me wrong, Linux is not a bad operating system, in fact, I sure did like the way it was based out. But it is not something that I would work with. Maybe I can not denounce linux without trying all the different ones. After all, I only tried red hat. | ||

Like I said, I personally did not like using the linux, In the days time, i set it up to the way I like it. But I was dissatisfied with some things in the red hat that windows is great for.

| Okay... 1. Yep... I'm trying to get good! I'd love to become a Linux pimp... Scapegoat, ttpear, Orestes and a coupla other folks here have a better grip on Linux right now (thanks for the help you guys)... it'll take me a little bit to get up to speed... but I'm sure I'll be happy to post everythin' I've learned... Also, you can change your mouse speed... it starts off slow... Go to "preferencec", "Mouse"... you can jack it up! Hell, my ultimate goal is "Run all your damn programs and plug-ins with this list of downloads...." I'm posting what little I'm discovering as I'm playing around. 2. I friggin' LOVE Linux... Maybe it's 'cause I like studying this crap, and making difficult stuff work. Give it a little time Gladiator... Linux ain't easy, but the more I study into it, the cooler I think it is. Between WINE, SAMBA, and a ton of other things, Linux can run a helluva lot of stuff... Anyway... give it time dude... it's cool stuff! | ||

Yeah, I am not giving it up. I just am pissed off about the lack of stability. Crashed it 3 times in a row and had to reboot each time. Slow as in the system loading. I open something and it takes about 5 seconds for it to open. In windows, I have it in nanosecounds. Otherwise, it is real nice. I will try it. Next step is Mandrake. ![]()

Well, I can't do the 'anything that comes to mind' part, but it's getting better daily (they just released Wine 3.0). I do, however, run RedHat 8 daily. I currently only have to boot into windows to use my digital camera (can't get it working in gphoto, tho I haven't tried very hard). Everything else I do or care about works just fine. As far as reliability and stability, my personal best uptime was ~160 days (RedHat 6.2). The machine was a Compaq Pentium 90. It ran a webserver, mailserver, and was the gateway/router/thing for my lan to share the modem. Granted it wasn't a very big load, but it was a pretty weak machine too. Ended up turning it off to move the machine to another room (the 'office' was turned into the baby's room).
