Well the limit for most of those chips is about 2.5ghz unless you are on a good board, with good cooling, and a good psu. I was only able to reach 2550 with 1.85 v core running 255 by 10 andi t was only stable for a coupla minutes.

Repeated restarts means you've taken it too high. try dropping the multiplier a bit and raising the FSB.

Sounds like the RAM in that instance. Take a look at some overclockable RAM from, say, OCZ.

Also, it could be your mobo. What kind do you have?

If it wont boot when you alter the FSB, there may be a setting call 'spread specturm' or something along those lines. My first OC attempt was hindered by that. It took me 3 weeks of reading articles at overclocking sites to find out that simple thing. Don't quote me, but I believe it is designed to keep your system within certain tolerances, and if it is enabled, you can't boot with an altered FSB. My current mobo (A7N8X) also has a setting for it, which is also disabled. This rig is an Award BIOS and the old rig was a Phoenix. You may need to back off an extra notch from the multiplier to get a good FSB speed. Trial and error as always.

Yes, we need alot more info about your hardware to be of any help, you need to list the major components when asking for tech help to save us having to drag it out of ya!
(CPU, Motherboard model and version, memory type/brand and timings, power supply, cooling etc..)

I have recently used some plain old Crucial CP2100 and with a few tweeks, it easily runs at PC3200 speeds, same goes for a stick of no name PC2700 way back when.

I have yet to find Ram that won't OC to some extent, it's usually the person trying to do the tweeking has no clue what to do in the Bios, or it's because the Motherboard does not have the right options to make it work right (No AGP Lock, unable to increase voltages, etc...)

To increase the FSB speed, you will need to make sure the AGP is locked at 66MHZ, run "Loose" memory timings, and most likely increase voltage to the Memory and NB Chipset.

If you have a cheap motherboard, it probably does not have these options.

EDIT: Wrath has a VERY good pointer there!
I've been doing this for so long, I tend to take it for granted people disable it, I need to update my OC guide...I left that out!

Thanks for the thumbs up! I'm starting my own simple tech site and I'm trying to be as thorough as possible with the articles I write. It's a real pain explaining things to every person who asks (I hear tons of questions) and thought it would be easier to write it all down and just point people in the right direction. I have a free anglefire deal right now, and it really blows. I wont even bother anyone with the address.

This may seem crazy, but check the amp output of the PSU. I have very similar mobo's (A7N8X rev 1.02 and 2 X A7N8X-VM400) and they will boot with bare minimum hardware with an average 350- 400 watt PSU, but in order to run all of my drives and fans I had to get a better PSU for my rev 1.02, and I made a dual PSU setup for the one VM400 (a new 480W is in shipping right now). Of course the VM400 has no overclocking features, but I'm using them for rigs I am selling to people who need a reliable PC and not the kind of crazy pimped OCed behemoths we here all love and enjoy. Probably not the answer, but that's what my experience was.
