Does anyone else here have a non-computer job, but work around them? I do, and what bugs me is that as soon as all the non-computer savvy people (most of them) find out you know the smallest thing, they come to you whenver anything goes wrong. I end up doing or IT dept's job around here, and they make more than me....pisses me off. Had to get that off my chest.

I was like that for many years. I finally told my bosses that if they wanted the support, they needed to get me the right equipment and pay for me to get some certifications.

Word got around and that's how I landed an IT support job here in Kansas. And that led to an IT Manager job that I start next month. So I'm not bitching about all the extra work I had to do besides my normal job, it paid off in the end.

I feel your pain. I'm in a different boat... I used to do all the IT work, but now I work at a different company, AND NO LONGER HAVE ADMIN RIGHTS!!!

Talk about going cold turkey.

Heh, heh... I worked for a Travel Agency... I knew more than the idiot who was the sole IT guy...

In that company, the IT guy also mowed the lawn, mucked out the stalls, and was basically more of the maintenance man...
In between his "Important" duties... he'd ogle the young women.
I did a ton of tech support for the people around me, and I kept getting management yelling at me for "Time off the phone"...

Then an IT position opened up and I applied for it...

My girlfriend (as I made a minor faux pas of dating someone at work) told me, "Well Dave... you better get some tits and a blonde wig... only way you're going to get THAT job."

Sure enough... he hired the girl with NO certifications, no computer knowledge... but she did have big hooters and blonde hair... I quit that month.

HERE IS THE KICKER:

A few years roll by... I am the sole admin for a marketing company. Due to the 911 thing and the economic recession from the whole fizzle of internet profits, travel isn't real big, and I hear they've laid off a ton of people from the travel agency. The idiot IT guy APPLIES where I worked and I got to turn HIM down for the job... I loved the irony of it.

That must have been sweet.
