Default For those "Last Minute" Filers...

Yep... I've put off friends, family, computer time... and I STILL keeping putting the damn things off!!!

I'm now at the "Now or Penalty" phase of my taxes... all I gotta really do is muddle my way through the paperwork... but just looking at it pisses me off 'cause I keep thinking I shouldn't be required to do this for the pathetic sum I made last year (insult to injury and all that jazz)

A friend sent this to me, I wish they'd come up with a form that easy... Maybe without #2 though!

Thank god I live in Alaska - no state taxes (infact, they pay us)! Only thing the state wants here is property taxes, and they're so low, it isn't a big deal.

Frighteningly enough, I was happy when we did our taxes this year. The baby was born last year (in March), so we got to use him to our advantage. Wife and I both made piddly amounts of money in '02, but the baby got us back a grand total of about $2000, when we'd only had about $1500 withheld from paychecks (this is Feds only). The baby was worth $500!!! 'Bout flippin time he made up for what he's cost!!!

(Seriously though, I love my son dearly. Even if he is the most expensive thing I've ever done! hehe)

I did pretty good on Federal this year, $1800, and was within $1 of breaking even on State. Buying a new house helped a lot, I was able to bring my taxable income WAY down.

What is going to suck next year is that I will have to actually pay State taxes for the first time in 20 years (this year was based on wife's income). Being military, I was able to "manipulate" my state of residence to a non-taxing state. But in Kansas, they soak you for state taxes. The only redeeming thing about here is they don't touch my retired military pay, that will make up for it.

I didn't work at all during '02 (on the books, anyway), so I didn't have to file. That'll teach you all to have real jobs
I'd recommend filing online if you can. The deadline is actually later (don't remember by how much though). Plus, you can file state and federal at the same time & the check comes in about a week (mine only took 5 days in '01).

Made out like bandits!! $2000 back in federal, $400 in state

Nothing compared to the $5300 we got back last year, but I'm not complaining...

The wife and I both claim single and zero, so we always get a refund (I HATE a tax bill) and with her being military a good chunk of it is tax free (more this year hopefully with her being deployed and all )

And frankly Anath, I think even if you threw nuts and bolts at Scape he'd eat em anyway...

I did my taxes online for free about 2 months ago. I ended up owing money so I saved the completed forms on my computer and waited till today to print them out, write the checks, and drop them in the mail. I used to pay someone to do my taxes but once I figured out the accountant was simply using some tax software and plugging in the numbers I started cutting out the middle and doing it myself using the easy online software you can find on the irs website.

Refund? what's that? I have a 1099-MISC, no W-2. i.e. technically I'm not employed, but TECHNICALY I recieve wages... so, technicaly I get D.A.R.'d by the IRS once a year. Oh and they give me the joy of adding in a nice penalty since I didn't make estimated tax payments (SHEAH! ) Some BS about "If you owe us more than $600, than you should pay us quarterly."

Would anyone care to make a charitable donation to the "Keep the IRS away from DeadTom" fund? I need about three and a half large that's with the house

Sport, I went about 5 years straight being tax free or having reduced taxes due to deployments. Talk about sweet!

I also broke down this year and got some Tax software. It worked great for Federal, but the $20 I spent to download the State package sucked. Won't do that again.

DeadTom, you just make too damn much money, that's all.

True, but I thought giving him a special treat would be nicer. He loves his granola, and all.
