| I've got rigs in the house running W98, W2K, and XP. Of all of them, the easiest to mange and manipulate is XP. I really like W2K, but only use that on systems that I don't game with. My advice, XP Pro is the best operating system that Microsoft has come up with yet. It incorporates all the compatibility features of W98 with the network security on an NT based system. Go with XP. | ||

| hmmm, its going to be mainly a backup rig. just in case something happens I loose my data, this one dies for some reason etc. going to try and set it up as a server for gaming. i'll keep you posted if i decide to make it a server or not. right know i would have to buy a switch to hook it up to our network and i dont have the 30 bucks to buy a switch so.... | ||

| It was minly for busnisess to replace NT4 in the work environment too. More secure and easier networking than NT4 At the time I think w2k pro cost around $500USD ore more, so outta reach for the normal user WinME was basically a buggy version of 98 with win2k look and features but I digress..Maverick is right ![]() | ||

| At the time of release, games didn't have support for W2K and the NTFS file system. That's where the "not good for gaming" rep came from. Almost all new games now have support for W2K. I play some older games, that's why I say I don't use my W2K rigs for gaming. But they would work with my newer stuff. | ||

| I KNOW what 2K was made for, but the thread isn't what they were made for. Red asked XP or 2K? He has both, so cost isn't an option. But there are a lot of pro XP posts and I'm trying to figure out why. If there is still a FPS issue, that's what I'd like to know, as well as compatibility, etc... Gimme objective evidence! | ||

| I really dont know. I havent ran 2000 in anything other than a work or school enviroment. i went from 98 to ME because of a money issue and then went to XP. 2000 is a great operating system. To me 2000 is just to slow. Ive ran it on and off of a domain there is a big difference in boot time and access among just other normal apps on the system. Ive only used one XP machine on a domain and it was slowed but not as much as 2000. It was even on a slower machine. Thats just my expeiences. | ||
