Default The latest problem

Alrighty,

For the past two days I've been trying to burn Mandrake 9.1 to CDs. This involves creating a CD from an ISO image. No big deal...or so I thought.

I'm now in the business of making coasters. I've wasted so many disks because it wont burn right. This was no problem in my old rig, but in my new rig, it doesn't work.

Here's the deal....I have a fist generation burner. It's a Sony Spressa purchased in 1998. It has worked flawlwessly until now.

I'm using Apdaptec CD creator 4. The burner is set to the master on the seconday IDE. Windows 98. WD 60GB HDD. AMD 2200+ 512 Corsair DDR 3200, ATI expert 2000, SB audigy platnum.

Any ideas or should I spend the 69 bux and buy a new CD burner?

have you tried burning anything else? As a test, or is it just the ISO giving you difficultys?

This does seem like a problem. Maybe its a problem with incompatibility somewhere along the line.

Scape, I just tried to burn 11 MP3s and it comes up witht e same error. It wrote one trac (incorrectly) and tried to close the CD.

I wonder if I should try to re-install aspi drivers. Or maybe enabe DMA on the unit itself?

This is a real PITA!

It may be the adaptec/roxio POS software. Try Nero, they let you try it before you buy it. Download and make another coaster, er, cd. See if that works. You will need the Nero as well as the InCD if you are doing a RW disc.

I,m with gumby. I've used both and I like Nero better. Your burner must be slooooow. I'd upgrade. My 40X burns a CD in under 3 minutes and you can get them for well under $100.

Adaptec is really picky about drivers abd patches ...... if you just installed in a fresh system, I would start at:

ive had pretty good luck with Roxio, but Putwig is right, it can be pretty picky about its driver, and CD-R support.

I would try updatiing the drivers(if you can find them )
http://beta.driverguide.com/beta/ind...0=spressa&dp=3

And with the low cost of CD-RW's it might be time to put that current one out to pasture.

I use EasyCD myself, but it does have it's share of problems for sure..Been a long time since I used version 4 though.

Are you using the same cd brand as you used to before? I've had problems with certain brands in the past.

Also Newegg.com has a sale on the Lite On 52x24x52 CDRW for $47.00...If all else fails

Well, absolutely nothing has changed execpt for the fact that its in a new rig. The media is the same and the software is the same.

I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't move it form the secondary master to the primary slave. Maybe that would help. Who knows.....

You also might want to check for firmware upgrades for your burner. I fixed a different problem that way once.

nero is a great burning program i think you can get a free trial from their site, works great, and that liteon burner from newegg - very good equipment

EDIT: i had a burner that wouldn't make a disk no matter what if the pci bus was any higher than 34mhz, the thing was the pickiest thing ever....

Hojo, I doubt that sony is still supporting this burner. It's 5 years old now!

Scape, Both rigs are using windows 98. Both were installed from the same disk.

I'm just going to go buy a new burner......

Grimm, everytime I reformat I must re-install a set of patches I downloaded from roxio in order to get my burner to play nice with the software (there are three patches in total).
