![]() The day came to get books and one of the books is Just enough Unix. I am looking over it right now and feel a little like a kid lost at the play ground. I dont know what Unix is and this book isnt helping. So my first question is "what is unix?" Im going to wiki on this but I would like some input. Can I run Unix on akira just to check it out and if so where can I get it? I am so lost at this point and it scares me. I dont want to be the guy at college that goes into his major knowing nothing where as the other people are masters at linux and Unix and I just get left behind. ![]() | ||

| In a nutshell, UNIX is a operating system. It was developed in the 1960's by Bell Laboratories and remains one of the most popular, stable and powerful systems to date. IBM's AIX, BSD, Mac OS X, LInux and many other operating systems are based on UNIX. Solaris is probably the closest to the original Unix OS, you can download a free version from Sun. You'll want the x64/x86 version. BSD is also free. | ||

| There are SO many versions of Linux floating around nowadays...some are so amazing that they are 100% graphical, and can install faster and easier than Windows! Some can even run Windows programs from within Linux! I just don't want to take the time to switch, because I would have by now. | ||
