| Quote: | | | | | | | | | | | Sods Law: (also known as Finagle's law or Murphy's Law) is a popular adage in Western culture, which broadly states that things will go wrong in any given situation. It is most commonly formulated as "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." The law was named after Major Edward A. Murphy, Jr., a development engineer working for a brief time on rocket sled experiments done by the United States Air Force in 1949. | | | | | |
It occured to me after talking to a couple of people over the pond, Sods Law appears to me rather scarse

. This deffinitive keystone of my vocab must be explained to aid those with little or no knowledge of this rather stress relieving phrase that really does explain the impossible, improbable, and damn right annoying.
Sods Law, thanks to Wiki for the quote, has gone through different phrases and states. Its more famous name is ofcourse Murphy's Law - a quote seen in more than a few scientific and engineering write ups and even computer hardware reviews. It occurs due to the thought occurance of the one line:
| Quote: | | | | | | | | | | | "If I do *insert job/task*, it better not *insert factor least required/hated for task*" | | | | | |
Through an inbalance in the odds and forces, the enevitable factor that is not needed will happen. Now without a cause, the perosn involved usually emits a series of slang words not usually permitted in the family home. Example:
| Quote: | | | | | | | | | | | "If I put the washing out to dry, I hope it doesnt rain."
*Puts washing out*
*5 mins later - rain*
"Oh for £$^"&"£&^^ sake! The £*$($^"$ing weather!"
Now, with Sod's law encorporated into this sequence, the human mind has a cause and enevitable blame to place. This not only helps to reduce the number of times the spouce falls out with you, but also acts as a stress relief and reduces the signs of stress. Example:
| Quote: | | | | | | | | | | | "If I put the washing out to dry, I hope it doesnt rain."
*Puts washing out*
*5 mins later - rain*
"Heh Sods Law isnt it! Put out the washing and down it comes!"
In usual responce, a spouce can undenialbly agree and a hearty conversation can be raised over the matter, instead of unanimate objects being thrown. Some more examples:
- Buttered bread landing butter side down.
- Pumping up one tire, only to find the opposite one has gone flat.
- Burnt toast, for no apparent reason.
- You go out to work, wearing full artic gear execting the worst of the elements. Turns out theres a heatwave.
Remember, if your boss has issued you 7 new tasks today when you just thought you were getting on well, its Sods Law...and yes, hes a sod as well...among other things.
Thanks for reading
