Default Suggestions for books

Im looking for a book that will make me think...something that will intregue me...but mainly get myself thinking abit. Does any one have any suggestions for books? Something that has to do with science or physics...or something around there...

So far I have The hitchhikers guide to the galxey, The Inventions, Researches and writings of Nikola Tesla ( i havent begin to read this yet)...and thats about it...Every other book i have is a reference book about electronics.

The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene
America's Forgtten Majority by Ruy Teixeira and Joel Rogers
Black Ice by Dan Verton

If you want to go science and physics, The Elegant Universe can't be beat although I highly recommend all three, Black Ice will scare the crap out of you. The Elegant Universe is a fantastic read for the layperson, even better if you have a math or physics background. Take Majority with a grain of salt, a bit too political for my taste, but makes some very good points if you want to think a bit.

If you want to explore the fantasy realm, I can give you a massive reading list that can keep you entertained for a couple of months...

I know a lot of people who praise Ayn Rand's books, (still haven't gotten to the copy of Atlas Shrugged that I got for x-mas). I liked Confederacy of Dunces, but it mainly appealed to my cynical nature, I identified with the book (people who have read this would laugh at me) and I changed my attitude quite a bit afterwards. I also liked Hemingway novels, I've read all the Clancy and Grisham(the latest hasn't come out in paperback to my knowledge) novels. I'd reccommend asking some of your teachers/professors, or even a librarian for some suggestions, since I gather that you want something profound/interesting.

Uber, when I read Nerdz post the first thing that popped into my mind was Ayn Rand, and specifically Atlas Shrugged. That was amazingly strange given that it's not as well known as it should be.

The book I touch the most is called a Dictionary. It's not the most compelling reading but it will make you smarter.

Dude, Uh... life, outside, go, fun.

Reading novels not only increases your vocabulary, it also increases knowledge. Especially when it comes to historical events or good technology novels. I can see you at a party making conversation "Did you know that the word "fine" has 14 meanings baby? One of them is you. The others are:
  1. Of superior quality, skill, or appearance: a fine day; a fine writer.
  2. Very small in size, weight, or thickness: fine type; fine paper.
    1. Free from impurities.
    2. Metallurgy. Containing pure metal in a specified proportion or amount: gold 21 carats fine.
  3. Very sharp; keen: a blade with a fine edge.
  4. Thin; slender: fine hairs.
  5. Exhibiting careful and delicate artistry: fine china. See synonyms at delicate.
  6. Consisting of very small particles; not coarse: fine dust.
  7. Subtle or precise: a fine difference.
  8. Able to make or detect effects of great subtlety or precision; sensitive: has a fine eye for color.

  9. Trained to the highest degree of physical efficiency: a fine racehorse.
  10. Characterized by refinement or elegance.
  11. Satisfactory; acceptable: Handing in your paper on Monday is fine.
  12. Being in a state of satisfactory health; quite well: I'm fine. And you?
  13. Used as an intensive: a fine mess."
I bet you get all the babes.

I have yet to read it, actually. If I remember correctly, you live in an area where critique of religious foundations isn't highly regarded. I have several friends that run the gamut from agnostic to plain atheist, so in my circles, the book is better known. Besides, I was told that it involves some paradoxes, which I like. Shrodinger's cat is dead. Surprisingly enough, I'm considering a Physics minor.

Understand that I am not originally from this area. I come from hardier Swedish stock up in North Dakota. My belief is that people are generally good and that individuals choose their own destiny.

I didn't choose mine, I forced it.

My favorite book is The Stand by Stephen King. This may not be exactly what you're looking for but it may get you thinking. Warning: it's over 1100 pages long.

I read "The Art of Deception" by Kevin Mitnick not too long ago. Not so much computer-related, but friggin sick nonetheless.

Two books:
1984, a classic, everyone should read it (or so I hear, haven't read it personally yet)
microserfs by Douglas Coupland. I recently finished this book, and my it was awesome.
Synopsis:
Focuses on one character, and his relationship with friends and his girlfriend. But, it's really about geek life in the early '90s, and how life in the geek world is, and general life reflections; awesome read, well written, and just a good time.

Is there anyone on this site who realizes that ALOT is not a word? Just tonight I've seen it 3 times and I am amazed that the usage is so widespread. Also, it is not ALOTT or ALLOT. Although allot is an actual word, it isn't used i the sentence "I want allot of women!". This may be a somewhat anal post, but not by alot.

Now, why the hell would I want to do that? I've never lived in France nor do I have the inclination to visit France. I've lived in Germany and Italy for an extended period of time (15 years) and can speak some of that. But French? Naw, you can keep that language. If I ever go North I know Canadian so I can get around the French language rules, Eh?
