Default Got moth. :)

Well, showed up for work today and we found ourselves quite the cool suprise. We had a giant cecropia moth sitting on the wing of the one aircraft. This thing had a wing span close to five inches and a body about as big around as a nickle. I got some pictures of it with the digital camera from work and figured I'd share. They aren't as good as a film camera but they aren't bad either. We were able to really gently pick the cobwebs from it's wings once we were done taking it's pictures. It flew off that afternoon so it seemed to not have been injured during it's stay. Gotta warn the dialup guys, I left the pictures full size so the smallest one is over 200kb.

and the rest

I run away screaming like a little girl from any insect, especially spiders; so that thing can go to hell, from whence it came.

Some brilliant pictures there. A creature of such beauty should never be allowed to die in vain.

I caught a massive moth like two weeks ago. About as big as you describe, except green all over with two dark green faux eyes. Thing was awesome. I kept it as a pet and used it as an alarm clock when it would start fluttering around when I wake up. Too bad it died :'(

Those big green ones are called luna moths. And no I didn't know that, other than while trying to figure out what ours was we found plenty of pictures of yours.

That's a nifty little picture of the moth. I had a run-in with an undetermined species just last night.

Check post #20 for the picture of the moth.

That is just too weird that you ran into your own monster moth around the same time. Subdismal, did a bit of searching and yours was a Royal Walnut Moth. Real native to the virginia area.

yep, that's him =D i had the joy of attempting to pry him off of the cieling with a giant metal ruler. he has a really freaking good grip. he eventually fell down and we were able to capture him and let him outside though
