Default Need help building a £500 ($900) gaming system

Ive been asked to build a gaming rig for a friend, his budget being £500 or about $912 USD not including software.

I would normally spend about £700 ($1200) on a budget gaming system for a client, so im slightly stuck. I told him that £700 would get him a better system, but he was insistent on the £500 figure.

Anyway, heres what im thinking at the moment:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 939 Retail

MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum

512Mb GeIL Value PC3200 RAM

ATI Radeon X700 Pro 128MB Graphics Card

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB IDE HDD (8Meg cache)

Samsung 52x/32x/16x CD-RW/DVD Combo

Asus TA-212 Series Midi Tower (Silver) - 360W PSU

Hyundai ImageQuest 17" CRT Monitor

nTech 3-in-1 Desktop Suite - Black/Silver (KB, Mouse + Speakers)

Total = £536 = $977

Or...

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice

Gigabyte K8NSC-939 nForce3 250GB

Samsung Original 512MB PC3200

HIS ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB DDR IceQ

Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Plus 120GB 8Mb cache

Samsung 52x/32x/16x CD-RW/DVD Combo

Arctic Cooling T2 Silentium Silent Midi Tower Case - 350W Seasonic Silent PSU

Hyundai ImageQuest 17" CRT Monitor

nTech 3-in-1 Desktop Suite - Black/Silver (KB, Mouse + Speakers)

Total = £495 = $903

They're both pretty good systems, but id like to cut the price down a little on the first system as id rather give him a PCI Express system.

So, hit me with any suggestions you have, all will be much appreciated

In case you haven't looked, Tigerdirect offers great deals on bundles. Right now you can get an Ultra 400 watt PSU and a case (forgot what it's called) for $60 after rebate. You can also get an Athlon 3000 w/ mobo for $250.

Since you live in England, I can't help you out much more. Places like Best Buy, CompUSA, and Circuit City do have $50 120 GB hard drives after rebate, but I don't think that's in England.
