Yeah very long read, but that's quite alarming to say the least. All that crap about zombie computers is very scary.

You mean his copy of Norton antivirus and Pentium3 450 couldnt fend off and hudge DoS attack? How suprising. Why doesnt this rich site owner get quade xeons, redundant powersuplies, 8gbs of ram with as much protection as possible(not off the shelf products). A bit harder to crash I would think.

it's not about trying to absorb the attack dude..did you not read where the hosting facility was absorbing 1.5Gb of traffic PER SECOND..i can attest to the fact that careerbuilder did not go over 150Mb (yeah, Megabits, not Gigabits) of traffic per second before, during, or after the super bowl for their monkey ads..1.5Gb is a sh**load of packets to throw at a network..That Lyon guy in the story is one smart cookie for desigining something to scan all the traffic and then send only the proper traffic over to the site..

Well what I ment is that im sure it would help, to beef up the network as a whole.

My friends dad runs his own internet service for coldlake alberta. They have 45x45 room fule of servers, sure its loaded something like 3%. But boy do they have some headroom, not to mention smarts.

i know what you meant..and it wont help..if the bandwitdh pipes and the equipment the pipes are going into cannot handle it, it doesnt matter what kind of server he had behind there..it says that even the DNS servers at the AZ hosting facility crapped out because they couldn't handle the load..you could spend hundreds of thousands of dollars upgrading every piece of the network as well as the servers, and still be a victim to a ddos attack..like i said, it's not about absorbing the traffic..this guy fought back, and won..

I think the guy ended up spending around a million or so in hardware to build the protection...

All of it + consulting fees to the packet ninja (who probably has an insane billing rate) They did manage to spin it off into a fledgling business though.

It really was a good read, you should all check it out if you have the time. The guy wanted 40 grand from him and he spent over a million to fight back, but I can understand that, it's the principle of the matter. I could only imagine how much it would suck to have to deal with that if you owned a business.

The parts about where the extortionists claimed to have 10,000-30,000+ zombie computers at their disposal sounds like something from a bad made-for-tv movie or science fiction novel, but you know, I'd believe it. And that there are hackers who set up these networks and rent them out to extortionists...damn that's some ruthless stuff.

What a world we live in eh.

i got to a point some time ago where i installed all necessary programs, drivers, and updates, and then made a ghost image that drive and restore to that image about once every couple months..makes for a huge time-saver and helps with performance..
