Default Getting Folding to the masses . . .

What a freaking week it's been . . . I meant to make this post last week, but work and a cold decided that there was no way I was going to be creatively constructive in ANY way shape or form.

The deal is this . . . I've been trying to think of a way to use the cards that lokies_mom put together to spread the news of F@H in a way that more people will actually FOLD . . .

It seems that too many people who have seen them are simply too paranoid to punch in the web site to find out what Folding's all about, and I was brainstorming for some ideas on how to get them to actually DO it . . .

I'm going to be working on a pamphlet to put up with some cards as a way of better educating people but was also thinking of a single sheet of paper for a mini poster to catch thier attention . . . possibly playing up to the "Do you know anyone suffering from (insert conditions here) and own a pc? You do? Then why aren't you trying to save thier lives??" angle . . .

So, here comes my point . . . Anyone with ANY suggestions as to what info should go on both a small poster and a pamphlet designed to give enough information to tell what Folding is and how easy it is, PLEASE either PM me your ideas or post them here.

The idea is both to spread the word about F@H in general but to also add to Team Pimprig's numbers in the bargain. *grins* Altruistic means to drive a selfish goal, but hey, it'll also get the word out about PR in general, too.

Thanks in advance for any help. We CAN make a difference, it just depends on if we actually want to WORK for it.

D

PS: Thanks to lokies_mom for the small pile of cards she sent. I've dropped a few off at the local business card drop points, and they've slowly been going away . . . let's hope they get acted upon!

That's a great idea. Anything that would grab people's attention and whatnot, give them some clear-cut information on how helpful folding is to medical technology.

You know what would be awesome? You know those little stands in the doctor's office (not sure if it's like this worldwide, but at my physician it is) there are the tables with all these little medical advice pamphlets about osteoporosis and everything...we could put these pamphlets outside of the doctor's office and maybe some moderately tech-savvy lady or gent would stumble upon it and decide it would be a good idea.

Doctor's offices, hospitals, dentists, chiropractors...anyone with involvement with medicine or the ability to draw in people who are currently in the medical-mood, I guess you could say.

However, you could draw this one step closer to helping PR and do a walkthrough of how to install the F@H program, and be sure to tell them to put 596 in the team name field.

Default Just some random thoughts...

I haven't seen any t-shirts, coffee cups, mouse pads or anything of that nature with the Folding@Home logo and/or url. Why is that? Did I miss it? Did I look in the wrong place? Finding the PR stuff was easy.

Sporting a t-shirt that says something like: "What does your pc do in its spare time?" and on the back put the Folding@home logo info or some catchy little phrase that makes people "want" to look at the back of your shirt for the answer. I'd wear one & give mouse pads to my family, friends, co-workers. For those that build/repair pc's for others they could give away a mouse pad w/each new build or repair.

Sub - Mom started putting her cards with her doctor, who also now folds as I understand. My wife's next OB/Gyn visit, I'm bringing a small pile with a plea to distribute them there. *grins* Also a great place for the pamphlet and poster once we get something done.

Que - So far as I understand (and I'm no where near a legal expert on merchandising, so please don't quote me on this) in order for us to do and Folding @ Home merchandise, we'd have to get permission from the F@H ppl. As a fund raising idea for the project, it sounds fantastic, but they are a not for profit organization. Now, as far as advertising for Team Pimprig . . . That'd depend on how GK'd handle the usage of the PR logo on paid for merchandise, I guess.

But those are just my guesses.

However, as an idea for spreading the word, those a hell of an idea! Thanks for the input!

And here's the pamphlet idea I just whipped together. Very rough, but it does get the idea through. The general information flow is exactly what I was looking for, but I know there's a fair bit of editing that can and should be done . . . but work has been eating up my free time like mad. Let me know what you all think, and please, don't feel bad about critisism. I won't take any of it personally, unless you give it like an ass.

Anyway, back to the salt mines for me.

PS If anyone has any ideas for companion 'posters' (Standard 8.5 by 11 size) or the such that would draw people to these and the cards, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks again!

D

::Edit:: Edited the file for some typo's and changed order of panels for flow.

I've handed those cards out to everyone. I got a few people folding anonymously, and a few folding for their own team, but folding nonetheless. I try to give those cards to anyone who buys computers or computer parts from me.

Hey, thanks for spottin the screwup. Big reason why I posted it up here is to get fresh eyes staring at it . . . Being at work, trying to get that out in between 3 or 4 different things . . . needless to say I didn't even really focus on the page order. *laughs* I'll give it a once over and give the page order a tweak, too.

::Edit:: Edited the file and reupped the zip file on the post above. Let me know what you think of the flow. (Keep in mind that it's set up to folded into three panels like most pamphlets)
