Default Ultimate Dream PC suggestions

Alright, I'm sure we've all done this at one point or another -- configured the ultimate pc (at least on paper). I already had this in mind and my A+ instuctor just happened to ask my class to configure their dream PC's. Here I have imagined the best PC I could think of. If any one can add to this, please do. Just keep in mind, this is a PC, not a server. We would all love to have our own Rackmount server, but its not gonna happen. And yes I know there are bigger monitors. The one listed is the biggest one with the .20 dot pitch. I have excluded the modem because that assumes the type of connection to be used, and floppy is a given. Also, most of the mods haven't been included because they really don't affect the performance. And, yes I know the GeForce isn't out yet, but it can be pre-ordered. 'Nuff said. Here it is.

-Case: Prometia Cooling Unit and PC65 in Techno Blue Metallic
-Monitor: SAMSUNG SYNCMASTER 1100P+ BLACK 21inch 20VIS .20MM 1600X1200
-Processor: Pentium 3.06Ghz
-RAM: 4 x OCZ Technology 512MB PC3700 466MHz DDR. 4.5ns chips. EL
-VGA: PNY GeForce FX 5800 128M 8X AGP DDRII
-Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
-Hard drives: 2x Maxtor 6Y250PO DiamondMax 16 250GB ATA133 Drive, 8M cache, 7200 rpm (In a RAID0 array)
-Power Supply: Vantec Stealth 570W
-Keyboard: TURBO-WIN 126KEY Multimedia Keyboard (PS/2)
-Mouse: Logitech MOUSEMAN DUAL OPTICAL WITH TWIN OPTICAL SENSORS
-Water cooling for chipset/GPU/Hardrive
-WindowÂ’s XP pro
-Windows 98
-Red Hat Linux 8.0 Professional
-DVD-R/RW: HP DVD Writer DVD300i 4x DVD+R , 2.4x + RW &
CDRW Combo Drive Retail Box
-CD-R/RW: LG ELECTRONICS 48X/24X/48X + 16X CD-RW/DVD-ROM EIDE INTERNAL COMBO DRIVE
-Speakers: Altec Lansing AL - 641 5 piece High Performance 4.1
-Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-SINXP1394

No, No , No. You configured that system like you were on a budget. Is there a budget you have to remain within?

there is a couple things i would change (my suggestion) 1) dont go with a p4 u get more bang for u buck out of an amd. 2) dont go with the GeForce Fx wait tell ATI brings the Radeon 9800 because it will be about 40% faster then the 9700 Pro which is almost as good as the GeForce Fx. 3) Dont put win 98 on the comp, because then u have to run xp pro in fat32 and not in NTFS, or just on its on partion. These are my opionions on ur setup. Its a awesome setup if thats what u want, but u can improve it with those suggestions that i have listed.

BA's right. If you don't have a budget. Ditch the DDR and go Rambus. Replace the ATA drives with LV320 scsi drives on a raid card. CRT's are definitely out....Apple Cinema 23" studio display. MouseMan dual optical is obsolete. Go with the MX700 or the bluetooth version of Microsoft's keyboard and mouse. Klipsh for the speakers.

hehe...this is fun. And since it's a dream computer make it so that every 6 month's it completely reconfigures itself to the latest and greatest hardware.

This guy is not talking dream...remember that monitor a while back that Matrox used in it's commercials...That would be bad ass! Or go with a 25"-30" flat pannel plasma tv with dvi input. (or even better yet, three of them)!

Just my little contribution!

Face it, without a budget, we could rule the world with only one PC.

first thing to come to mind it the Promethia and watercooling together. I would use 2 promethia setups. one for the chip, one for the GPU.

then you guys are thinking too yesterday's tech. Go with the Serial ATA in Raid 5.

Logitech speakers? Puh-lease! Klipsch all the way!

I would still go with the Lite on cdrw

have fun.

As far as Rambus goes, does anyone know of a Rambus supporting board with 8x AGP, Pentium 4, and a decent number of USB 2.0? If youdo please tell me. I searched for weeks for one. SCSI definitely a good idea. Why didn't I think of that? Hmmm.. three flat panel TV's. Sweeeeeeet!!! I really didn't know much about speakers, so thanks there. And I would still need the water cooling for the chipset and HDD's wouldn't I? Just to clear up any confusion, I'm not actually building this thing. Just dreaming.
Thanks for all the input.

Gigabyte GA-8IHXP has everything but 8x AGP. As far as I know none of the 850E chipset boards support 8x. 8x isn't much of an advantage at this point anyway. A 4.2 gigabyte memory path is.

And here's the monitor you need.

Nooo way!!!! if you don't have a no budget there are WAY WAY better speakers you could go with, such as the Bowers & Wilkins (GREAT SPEAKERS, very very sexy) or Bang & olufsen which are also very very good speakers....

check em out... they kick some ass... if your teacher is an audiophile you might impress him!

Also, run a decent distro!
I know im prob going to get flamed for this because a lot of you run Redhat... but it has to be said "THERE ARE BETTER DISTRO'S THAN REDHAT!!!!"
way way better in fact... my suggestion would be to put slackware or Debian maybe if you want something a lil differnt try BSD also a very very good OS.

star you gotta have something else then just the DVD Burner, you need at least a CD-Rom so you can do Cd-Cd copy. Plasma is bad because if you use it at least 4 hours a day non stop it will burn out in 4 yrs. And Dual Channel DDR come on know, you gotta go with Rambus 1066. My owning comp:
VapoChil Case
Dual P4 3.06Ghz @ 4.06Ghz
4GB 1066 RDRam
4 250 Gb Maxtor HDD (SATA)(/w 8mb chace)
Radeon 9800
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
10/100/1000 NIC
DVD-RW
52x Cd-Rom
60" LCD Screen

or this will work http://alienware.com/main/configurator_pages/custom.asp
