Default Definition of redundant: see redundant

Ok, been having an on going problem with my webhosting email servers. the problem is sporadic at best and only effects sending mail to a certain number of large provider networks like yahoo, hotmail, comcast, bell south, etc etc etc.

Now, I can receive new email just fine, but if i send a message to any one of those networks it bounces back immediately or it will sit on the mail server for 48 hours and then bounce back after the mail server gets tired of trying to push it out of the network.

So, naturally after checking every possible aspect on my end and finding no solution, I send thier support team the info and request they look into it. This is what i get back.

Quote:
The messages above never left our system. "553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts" is generally an authentication error. Our system does not authenticate when sending, only when receiving. If it has been a few hours since you've authenticated yourself to the server (by checking for new mail), the system will not allow you to send mail and return this error. Make sure your mail client is checking for new mail before sending instead of the other way around.

Ok, so tell me genius. if the mx server doesn't require authentication for me to send email, then what does authenticating myself by receiving mail (which i have no problem with in the first place) do to correct the issue at hand of my messages not getting past the mail server?

"I have carefully examined my system and it is checking for new mail prior to sending an email. So what else could it be ?"

Hey Ov3rki11, I had that same problem a while back when my hosting service was bought out by another company. I could receive, but never send. They (the hosting service) told me that they use a port number for SMTP (outgoing) that was blocked on my high speed internet providerÂ’s servers (Comcast) and that Comcast probably wouldnÂ’t unblock it.

I called Comcast and they told me that they wouldnÂ’t unblock it so I would have to use their SMTP server for outgoing. They told me what the server name was (mail.comcast.net in my case). I'm using Outlook Express so I just plugged that into the SMTP box and problem solved.

Hope that helps since I donÂ’t know your setup.

Maybe your IP range got blocked if someone near your IP was spamming. Its a possibility if your getting bouncebacks from all the major providers...

actually comcast only blocks ports in the 30's and 300's range on the network because of viruses that spread over the network through protocol. it's nothing that would effect your smtp connections.

also the fact that they told you you had to use comcasts smtp server with your 3rd party domain address was off base too as that would be relaying, which comcast does block. it may work for a while but as soon as the MX server checks the logs and sees mismatching domain info it'll slam you.

i'm so glad i don't have to work there anymore. added 30 years to my life getting fired.

Alot of them use reverse dns for spam. Somthing most providers setup by default, but some don't (Savvis) We changed our pipes a couple of months ago and had the same problem until we had Savvis update our reverse DNS.

the problem is happening on two seperate accounts hosted by the same company. i admin both accounts and thier domains. doubtful it's a spamming or black list problem as i would have gotten notifications stating to contact an abuse department concerning the matter.

i'm thinking that's what the problem is as it's pretty common with 3rd party webhosting and large networks. alot of times the MX server refresh rates aren't set high enough and they don't populate in the DNS tables as quickly as they should when the DNS servers update thier tables.

been through this i don't know how many times at my last job. what sucks is the site i normally use to diagnose this problem is acting really sketchy so i can't trust any output i get from it, if i get any feed back at all.

Mr. Cracker is right..a lot of hosting companies are realizing this..your zone (blah.com) needs to have a reverse DNS record that points the IP back to the zone (blah.com)..you may have to fork out a lil more with your current provider to obtain this, or move to a new provider..good luck good sir..
