Question POLL: Do you think todays teens appreciate older music?

"Earlier today was listening to one of my Creedence Clearwater Revival cd's and got into a conversation with my Mom that brought something to mind... do most people share my Mom's opinion that todays teens don't appreciate music such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Door's, Roy Orbison or perhaps even T-Rex?... Just curious as to what everyone thinks."

Kit

EDIT: "Quick note, those who are old enough to remember any of the listed groups when they were new I apologize I am not making a crack at your age. Just to us teenagers for music stuff such as the above listed is fairly old."

Hey, who you calling old. My 17 year old likes some of the old stuff. She really likes Pink Floyd and the Beatles. I still have my original copies of a lot of stuff I doubt you've ever heard of on vinyl, although I don't have anything to play them on anymore.

"Good ol' Pink Floyd... Not a big Beatles fan though. But as far as the stuff you doubt I've ever heard... mind testing me on that? Got me all curious.

And anime-fan-man I happen to share your opinion in all of that, save for one thing... some rap rock is ok with me such as RATM. Also one other thing... perhaps teens can appreciate music there parents might have listened to also... I managed to get some of the guys in my engineering class to not scream in pain whenever I played Bruce Springsteen (SP?)... of course thats not very old."

well caught me at a good time actually...surfin on my sons computer as i install some apps and doin general clean up on it...i have 2 sons 15&16...and i hafta say they have good knowledge of music old and new...although being a guitarist i have had my fair share of brainwashing them probably..lol..i can look at their cd racks from here and see Chuck Berry next to Coldplay and Muddy Waters next to Mudvayne...lol...dunno if theyre average teens, but both can tell u what real music is and what is smoke and mirrors of hype and gimmik that alot of todays lackluster artists survive on...not crackin on any of the young ones here, but name me some bands of today u think will still be playing in 20-30 yrs...and if hojo will get my back...lol...i bet we can double the amount naming classic bands that are still goin after the same amount of yrs

Heh, heh...

I was listening to "old" music when I was still in my teens... Yep... Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Strauss...

Actually, I blew this guy's mind when I bought a Moody Blues CD...

I don't know too many teens (don't talk to many people these days period...), but of the ones I do, they seem to know of the "crap my parents listen to"... which includes all my favorites like "Whitesnake", "Pink Floyd", "Fleetwood Mac", "Led Zepplin", "Black Sabbath", etc...

Tell ya the truth... one sure-fire sign I'm gettin' older is the fact I can't understand the younger generation's music...

"******************************, bangin' my hoe in da hood! She suckin' my (censored) while I'm (censored), and I'm (censored), (censored), (censored)"

I mean... it's all sex and cop-killin' and words a lot of us white folks are NOT supposed to be sayin' if we wanna show we've ascended prejudism...

In MY day it was suicide, depression and anarchy... plus Tipper Gore ragin' against rock at those lame ass senate hearings!

Ahhh, the good ol' days

ADD: Jinx... ya got my vote...

BTW: My folks corrupted my brain with the older stuff as well, gave me a WIDE appreciation... still, I will NEVER like most of the bubblegum years "Yummy, yummy, yummy, I got love in my tummy" makes me wanna throw that "love" right the hell up.

Still.... would have been cool to have been around for the emergence of Hendrix, the Stones, The Dave Clark Five, Elvis, The Zombies, Cream, Zepplin, and so many more! Woodstock would have kicked some serious ass (and that lame-ass attempt in 99 to ressurect woodstock was a VERY sad joke...)

LMAO!!

I listen to a lot of different stuff.. Depends on my mood and what I can get my hands on (and other factors). I'll listen to stuff from the 1400s to more recent stuff. Though I can't say I'm pleased with most of the stuff that comes out these days. I don't listen to radio of any sort much anymore unless it's classical/jazz and that kind of stuff. After a while everything else starts to sound the same. Seems like nobody has nothing new to make a song about anymore. Oh well. That's life.

And Dark.. you forgot the songs about gettin high, getting your girl to shake her booty a little more, how big an OG you are from the streets of Compton, Please baby, please baby baby come back to me type stuff.. and the same recycled stuff I've been hearing forever and ever and ever AND ever. (Uhm. I'm a bit overly critical tonight, forgive me.)

I'm 15, and my favorite musical piece of all time is Beethoven's 9th symphony. I hate just about anything from the last decade, and love groups like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. While most of the cool and popular kids at my school prefer the homogenious crap that's come out in the last 5-10 years, most of my friends prefer the old stuff.

CCR, T-Rex, Roy Orbison, Beatles, Old Stones, Jimmy and Jim, that is what I was raised on and what I still listen to. My teenagers think some of it is strange, but appreciate the music. They prefer newer rock bands but thankfully never got into the "hard rap".

well i just left my teenage years behind 2 months ago, but i'm definitely a huge fan of older music, i count led zeppelin, the doors, rolling stones, lynyrd skynyrd hendrix, and pink floyd among my all time favs. my group of friends listens to the same too, definitely good drinking music, everyone knows the words to the classics and we all sing along in our drunken stupor. i'm also a fan of some of the lesser known "garage rock" type bands i.e. the stooges, mc5, new york dolls, velvet undergound, kinks ect.

I'm pretty young, 23, but I never got into the "new" pop trash that has come out since I was about 13. Almost all american artists today, are total trash, they have no message at all and will make whatever bullsh!t pop LA MTV fad garbage they feel like selling us this week. Artists today care more about making $$ than their music, whereas before you cared about your music first and took whatever you could get by on.

About the only current stuff I like, and my personal favorite listening material is all european trance, and live DJ sets. I have gigs of stuff that I would bet a very small (less than 1%) of people in the states would have even heard of before. If you guys are really into music, europe is where you have to look, they have always been the one pushing music and sound into places where it hasn't gone before, whereas in the US we just buy whatever garbage the record industry sells us.

Just look back on say like, the Billboard Weekly lists, uhm there hasn't been a top 10 SONG I have even liked, let alone thought it was good in twenty-five YEARS. Its ALL garbage, spare the rare original songs that come out maybe a few times a year. N'sync, bbs, girl bands, boy bands, garbage rap, regurgitated trash rock, its all pop garbage that shouldn't has even got the time of day in a studio, yet this puke is selling, and selling millions and millions of copys, so that crack smoking idiots can go buy 10 carat diamond necklaces to give to their whores in music videos and have 50 cars that will get repo'ed in 3 years when noone gives a crap about your crappy album because some other moron that cusses just alittle bit more and has more hoochies in his music video came along and the record companies kick you to the curb and didn't say anything when you were doing an ounce of coke a week.

The most digusting thing ever is like talking to these "people" that when they hear a song they are like, hey thats Puffys song, not, hey thats Kashmir from Led Zepplin I just want to snap and beat some sense into them with a 2 by 4.

I can't wait till Ringo dies, once that happens all that stands between all the Beatles songs being redone by whatever stupid peice of ghetto trash that comes along to MTV is Paul and the other people that own the rights. And we all know that everyone one of them is a sell-out and would do anything for a few more days in the spotlight and another few million bux. Mark my words, this will happen, and when it does, American Culture is dead, move to Canada or Europe.

Well from my experience and i have alot of it in the music field, i would say a small ammount of them appreciate good old technical material where back in the day, musicians had total mastery over their instrument. My friends band was doing a very big show and i was doing guitar tech my friend asked me to start shredding Yngwie stuff sweep picking and all that kinda stuff, so i did and most people in the audience didnt seem to even think much of it.....i guess it was too complicated for their them, then my friends band started playing their simple power chord strum and man did the audience get into it they loved it, i realized how old i was then that day, and that my generation (70s-80s Rock metal scene) is over and how forgotten my sound truly was, depressing to know that you are still kinda young (im only 25) but i cannot relate musicly with anyone now and music is my life.
i have had quite a few instances with this result and also when im in music stores and jamming out i notice the older guys inthe shop get into what im playing and we usually get into long conversations about music back in the day ...but not once have i seen a younger person or even a person my age look remotely interested, and i have to pay attention to things like this cause im in a band now.
All in all from my personal experience i woudl say VERY FEW of the youth today like good old classic rock or 80s metal rock.

Canada? I wouldn't call Avril any good Nickelback is OK. Otherwise I basically agree with DS on just about everything he said, same with some others.

edit: At the HS I go to most people don't appreciate the "old" music but instead all the crap that is played on MTV. If it's played on MTV it is probably just garbage.

Bald...

Micheal Jackson OWNS the lyrics to the Beatles tunes... he outbid Paul McCartny at an auction.

He's pimped off their music to everyone with a wallet.... so it's been done. Hell... there is somethin' like 200 versions of "Let it Be" or somethin' like that.

I know Jackson owns some of them, not all of them though. Nothing has really been redone though, just covered..
Wait till DMX or some other idiot rapper gets ahold of them and remixes em and has the video played 50x a day on MTV. Then those songs get equated to some idiot ghetto rapper instead of the Beatles to the populace.
