Default Windows XP to 98SE to trick SATA?

This machine has always had issues with Windows XP (randomly hangs) and you can't install Windows 98SE on a SATA drive unless you have a pre-existing IDE drive, so I'm stuck on Linux for now. But do you think this little trick will work?

I install Windows XP using the F6 key to install the SATA driver. But when that's done, the first thing I do is pop in the 98SE disk and do a downgrade. Since the SATA driver is already there, maybe it will recognize the disk? Or can you install windows 98 over top like that, without booting off the CD?

Thanks for your opinion.

Okie after reading your post, i have no idea why you would want to downgrade, but ok...

I take it you use Linux, have you thought about using the SATA drive for windows, and the IDE drive for Linux? and then go into the bios and switch which drive you want to boot from......Hmm i noticed the ASUS deluxe mobo in your system spec's...watch out for that board J-Dogg hates those with a passion

Oh you can't install XP on the SATA drive? i remember something about some kind of format...

Hey Baz and dreyco, you guys using the same board?

sometimes there will be an option that will, might, read SCSI/RAID
from what i can remember from another thread is that its best to have it set to SCSI/RAID

Randomly hangs you say? Would these hangs happen to go away after you wait a minute or so? If so, I have the same problem

EDIT: Crap, forgot that I was saving my 2000th post for something important. Oh well

Windows wont allow you to install an older version of an operating system on a disk with a newer version already install - you have to format the disk. This of course will kill your SATA driver and you will start all over again. I would just spend a bit of time to work out your XP issues instead of rigging your machine.

Some chipsets have "native" SATA support - my PC is like this. Others require you to have the drivers on a disk......

I have the A7N8X-E Deluxe, which is basicly just an update of the old A7N8X. The chipset doesn't natively support SATA, so they threw on a Silicon Image chip.

My "hang", I mean that the monitor goes black and the disk activity light stays on. Completely unrecoverable.
