| *WoW* EVER WONDER about those Big Box rebate offers on computer kit being too good to be true? Still waiting for your rebate cheque to arrive? The US government is starting to move against companies that aren't paying up on time. On Friday, March 11, the United States Federal Trade Commission (here) settled charges against CompUSA http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=21807 Last edited by THRASHER2; 15-March-05 at 04:41 AM.. | Actually, I have someone who ordered a soyo barebones kit from tigerdirect in Sept/Oct, (per my recommendation) and still haven't received their rebate check..... also the mb had to be rma'ed, and that fiasco took 2 months to resolve. All in all I was pleased by the way that TigerDirect handled themselves, but not in the support/service from soyo. | ||

Oh considering only 40% of the people who buy rebated items send em in, why blame us, we can't hold your hand out the door now can we? I have been working retail for 7 years, I been to all, seen all, know all... Most times when people come in complaining to me that their rebate didn't come in, they hand me the rebate form itself. ![]() People who buy rebated item turn around and sell em on ebay, which is rebate fraud and you are caught you will no longer qualify either. I caught two or three people doing this when I was at Office max. Most employees despise people who buy only rebate items becasue companies lose profit margins, then customers turn around and wine about pricing and availability, well duh, if companies give back 20-40% of the money how do you expect them to make more of the products let alone new ones? ~Bob | ||

| i hate rebates they mislead the price of things, like when they have a price tag in store or on an ad that says the price after rebate in huge letters and then in small print somewhere it says after rebate. it sucks, and it takes forever to get them assuming that you get them at all | ||

| Awwwww..... My widdle heart is bweeding for CompUSA.....NOT! Khell, I can see your position from a retailer's perspective, but most of these rebates are offered through the manufacturer, not the retail outlet. They are then handled by rebate clearing houses whose job is to rip off and deny as many rebates as possible. Yeah, they get to keep every rebate they don't pay out, and they'll scam you every chance they get. When we were still dating, my wife saw the 17" LCD monitor I am on now in a CompUSA ad. We drove to the store about an hour after it had opened...and all the monitors were gone. An honest employee there told us that only 4 sale monitors had ever been delivered, and then gladly tried to sell us one in stock for double the price. We went home and found that we could order it online from CompUSA and still get the same rebates which totaled $150. We ordered it and got a few delays in shipping, but barely received it in time to get the rebates sent off. The $60 rebate through CompUSA was paid within their 4-6 week window. The $90 manufacturer's rebate, which was handled by a rebate clearing house, took us 7 months to receive. Yeah, SEVEN months. We got run through the mill regarding the post date of the letter, they tried to say they'd never received it and wanted new copies when the rebate specifically requested original receipts...the whole schmeer. After an honest 6 hours total phone time and countless email and snail mail attempts, we got a check. It hardly seemed worth the hassle. As for employees despising people that want a good deal on something they need....it shows. I won't go to any retail outlet where I feel despised by the staff for spending money at their store (and I got a lot of eyerolling types at CompUSA). If they don't want people coming in for rebate-only items, perhaps dropping the whole bait-and-switch marketing tactic and focusing on quality of service at reasonable prices might be in order. *steps down off soapbox* Wordbiker | ||
