| Hey guys, it has been quite some time since I've bought a motherboard and/or CPU..(Currently running 1.8 athlon xp and epox 8krda+) I'm building a new PC for a customer and for my wife. I want to order a couple new boards and CPUs for each; each set around $150. I've found some good prices over at www.partspc.com, but don't know what brands are good. I wanna stick with AMD. Niether will be doing games or anything real 3d; mostly internet and office stuff. The brands I've seen lately are as follows: Asus Asrock Abit Biostar Tyan Soyo Gigabyte DFI ECS Fujitsu Microstar PC Chips Syntax So, can you guys help a brother out? | ||

| Grab the AMD 64 2800+ ~ 3400+ for socket 754 (Single Channel memory) or the 3000+ ~ 3500+ for socket 939 (Dual Channel memory) There is not a huge performance difference for most light duty apps, so you can save a few bucks going 754 single channel, but it does not have the upgrade path that the 939 will. Motherboards, ASUS has a rep for being the most reliable and feature packed, with some OC options. DFi is my personal favorite, but I am an OC junkie that loves 300+FSB and I'm willing to deal with something a litttle more "Fussy" EDIT: The Athlon XP is still viable for surfing the net and light duty apps, although at the same clock speeds, the AMD 64 feels much more responsive. | ||

Both the EGG and Zip Zoom Fly list it at 83$ stll, they have stripped down versions for 65$ called the NF7-S2G. It would probalby work just as well for his needs, I have heard they are not the OC monsters the regualr NF-7S is though. Here is a board MSI NFORCE 2 a friend has, works rather well for his needs, 35$ refubished http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...pe=Refurbished Throw in 512MB of PC3200 andd you are golden, dual channel isn't that huge of a gain, and at 35$ you can grab onother stick down the road if you need it http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...211-119&depa=0 I think the Sempron 2400+ with a retail HSF for 65$ shipped is a good deal if you can't find something used. http://www.buyxg.com/store/item.asp?key=CU-156-101 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
