Default What is this world coming to?

For those who haven't heard, there was fairly large crime that happened during the prior week.

Quote:
Two boys arrested in gas station attendant's death

VANCOUVER – Two teens are in custody in connection with the death of a Maple Ridge service station attendant on Monday night.

The RCMP arrested a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old in Maple Ridge on Tuesday.

Twenty-four-year-old Grant De Patie of Maple Ridge died after being run over and dragged for seven-and-a-half kilometres by the driver of a stolen car.

Ridge Meadows RCMP Corp. Bernie Smandych says he had tried to stop the driver from leaving the Esso station on Dewdney Trunk Road and 248th Avenue without paying $12.30 for gas.

The attendant's body was found at 240th Street and 112th Avenue in Maple Ridge, 16 blocks from the service station.

Police had put out an alert of a white 1990 Chrysler Lebaron with licence plate number 561-FDN, which had been stolen from Maple Ridge on Monday night

Ridge Meadows RCMP later recovered a car that matched the description of the suspect vehicle, right down to the licence.

The gas cap was still hanging from the side of the car.

Police say they arrested two suspects after getting a tip.

They say a friend of the 16-year-old told them that the teen showed up drunk and in tears at his house on Monday night and confessed.

Local residents who knew De Patie say he was as kindhearted as he was hardworking.

"He'd help out everybodyÂ… He'd never let you starve or God forbid, go without cigarettes," says Darcy Nordell who saw him almost every day for nine months. "He was just willing to help anybody. You'd never see him in a bad mood ever."

A few may think.. big deal, why bother posting this?
Well I work in the industry.. so it bothers me. (no I don't work at the station above)

Is someone's life worth $12 in gas?
What were a 15 and 16 year old doing drinking in the first place?
Do people today really care about anything?

You would not believe how many people I deal with, on a daily basis, who will come in to our station just to complain about gas prices, then fill up.

We give full service, without any additional charge.
Our price is the same as any self serve.
We're not asking for anything, but when we bend over backwards and give someone good service (like we always do), is a "thank you" so hard to ask for?

This is slowly turning into a rant, so I apologize for that. But it's on my mind right now (since I'm freshly off work), and I have the need to speak my mind.

When one pulls into a station, there are signs.
The key that has been X'ed out does not just mean "turn off your engine, but feel free to listen to the radio". It means by law you must turn off all forms of power in your car, turn off the ignition completely.

Cell phones are not illegal, in some places. But they are frowned upon and not recommended to be used within 25 feet or 7.5 metres from the pumps. This goes for smoking as well.

It's really amazing how many people either forget these, or don't know them at all.

I swear that 80% of the customers that come to our station are idiots.
*sigh*

Again sorry for this, I just needed to vent.
Thank you.

Anyways back to the topic at hand.

These kids will probably just get a slap on the wrist, 6 months in juvenile and 100 hours of community service.

Think laws should be altered in cases like this?
I think they should both be tried as adults, for man-slaughter at the least.
