Default Best Upgrade?

Well I guess I should start off with some specs:
- Athlon XP 2200+
- Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo
- 256MB Kingston PC3200
- sh!tty really-slow really-small IDE hard drive
- Radeon 7000 (64MB)

What upgrade should I do first to improve general, overall performance? I could:
- Get to a fast SATA hard drive (I have onboard SATA)
- Get a respectable video card (But that would only affect gaming performance...)
- Get another 256MB of RAM (Maybe dual-channel it?)

Right now I'm leaning towards the hard drive. What would you do?

For me, it all depends on your budget, because if you look around hard enough, you might be able to score on two of those . . . But I'd start with Ram, myself. In my opinion, you have to have at least 512 megs . . . Any improvement you'd see with the SATA would be minimized with the 256 megs, as I understand.

Ram. You will notice a huge difference. I multitask like mad, so I can't live with less than 512MB, and prefer atleast 768MB.

the best upgrade would be the RAM I would think, i prefer 512 as minimum if you got the second stick of it then you should notice a great increase, have a look around for cheap RAM modules can buy them second hand and maybe get another bit of kit

RAM...i haven't run anything under 1G of RAM; however, i just bought my GF a comp for x-mas. It came with 256 RAM. Just added another 256....her opinion of the performance boost: "Oh my god! It's like night and day... why the h3ll didn't you do that sooner?"

Thanks so much you guys. I've been wondering why my rig is crawling along and this just might be the thing.

As long as the sticks are an exact match, is there any other requirements for running them in dual-channel mode? Does it put any extra stress on the ram?

In the past year i've upgraded mobo 2 times (3 if you count my original purchase) and proc. once. I haven't had to touch the RAM (knocks on wood). Altough dual channel is a waste on my current rig, i'm quite happy having plenty of breathing room that 1G of RAM affords me (plus i got it at a pretty decent price ). RAM is one component that is relatively inexpensive (comparatively) to give yourself overkill on (i view it as "room to grow" - Stage 3: Bargaining )
