I used to pay the automated toll booth in Virginia Beach with a handfull of pennies I had collected in my ash tray all the time....

If one fist full didn't get me a green light, I would just load up another fist and toss it in.

what i found ammusing was that they said it would "waste" county resources counting the change. Well, what do they think they are doing by not accepting the payment and fighting with the man about it? Is that not wasting county resources as well?

And to be honest, i think he's justified in paying the fine in pennies. $82 for a broken headlight is bit outrageous if you ask me, why charge a person a fine that's twice if not three times the cost of the hardware to fix it?

That's awesome.

I remember one time I was running WAY low on cash, and I paid the gas station attendant 11.50 in primarily nickels, dimes, and pennies.

Granted, the pennies are, by U.S. law, legal tender. However, that still doesn't change the fact that the guy violated the law and in response, makes it difficult to get the matter settled the quickest way possible. To what purpose did paying the fine in pennies accomplish? The court clerk didn't write him the ticket. It's like getting your butt kicked by a large man only to turn around and beat up his little brother in response.

As far as "wasting" resources counting the money, how many times have anyone of us gone to a government office only to complain that it takes forever to get service? Remember the last time you were at the DMV? How upset would you be if the person in front of you paid their car registration in pennies? Would you wait the three or four hours it would take the cashier to count the $200 to $800 in pennies?

Plain and simple, the guy was a jerk and I would have made him wait until I counted the $82.00 in pennies to give him a receipt. If he would have walked out without it.....well, I'd laugh if the guy came up a penny short and a warrant was sworn out on him.

It's funny when you read about it, or do it to someone.
But not when it happens to you.

Had exactly what HappyCamper said happen to me.. $20 worth.

From what I understand, a public org. can not turn down legal U.S. tender. It would be pretty screwed up if the Gov't didn't take its own money, that IT printed wouldn't it?

On the other hand, the guy WAS an a$$hat, and if I where the clerk I woulda "lost" 6 pennies, and returned it.

Sounds like you've never been pulled over for something stupid. Most states only give a "fix-it-ticket" for a headlight, but to charge $82 for it, is absolutely ridiculous. Just my $.02!

I've had five different tickets in my life and four of them I guarentee that it was a bullsh*t ticket. One county sheriff in Missouri stated he got me doing 75 in a 65 with his rear-mounted radar detector. When I called their dispatch the next day on the pretense of writing a college paper, they said that they didn't have any rear-mounted radars in their cars. Another one in Vegas, a taxi blew past me next to McCarren airport setting off a drowsy cop's radar gun and when he turned to look, he seen me so I got the ticket.

Trust me, the other two are just as bullsh*t as the two I just described. However, I just paid the ticket and went on because sometimes life isn't fair. It only causes stress and aggrevation when you try to fight it and all it takes is for the cop to show up at the hearing and you're screwed. I should know for reasons I'm not going to explain.

Damn, those definitely are BS tickets...

A State Trooped pulled my wife over and he confescated her radar detector (which are NOT illegal in NY). She went home that night (we were not married at the time) and she called me and told me what happened. Since I knew that they were NOT illegal, I went right to the trooper barracks that night, and found a big pile of 'em right on the front counter. So I said to the receptionist at the front desk that I needed to get my fiances radar detector back. She was telling me a story how the trooper that took all these has so many restraining orders against him, because he has been harrasing so many people in the area. He even pulled my wife over one time for having a "loud sound system" in her car, when at that time, she had NOTHING in her car. The same guy, maybe a week later, pulled my wife over AGAIN for TINT!! She had NO tint on her car. So yeah... cops can be dinks sometimes!

That's why I really thought that paying in pennies would be so funny... it's fair enough for them wasting so much of our time, I guess..

while there are always bad apples in the bunch, cops for the most part are doing their job. guys like yours should've been kicked out of the force a long time before any of that happened, sounds like . ..

I agree, their are definitely bad apples. I've known a lot of really good cops throughout my time running my car club. A lot of cops will harrass a pack of cars cruising around, while some will keep an eye on us to make sure we aren't causing trouble (which we don't do). But with the whole scene getting out of hand with the little punks just getting their license, they mess everything up for the rest of us that are serious about our hobby. (CAR MODDING ) So now, in my area, anyone driving around in a modified car will get pulled over for something really stupid, like having aftermarket wheels, or some MAJOR BS like that!

Sorry to vent... haha... but I just had to get that out.

I remember seeing the Tom Green show a few years back where he was going into places and pouring a huge bag of pennies out to pay for stuff. People got pissed. Really all the people would have to do to count it is take it to the bank and pour it in one of those coin counting machines. It wouldn't waste that much "man power". I wonder how many pennis a bank has on hand at any given time....
