Teen's KKK Costume Wins Prize, Suspension

Nov 3, 7:27 AM (ET)

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A high school student's costume garnered a top prize - and a five-day suspension - at the school's Halloween masquerade party.

The Ku Klux Klansman getup took the prize for the scariest costume at the City High School dance attended by the principal, assistant principal and other staff members.

Superintendent Bert Bleke said he agreed with the school's decision to suspend the student but wanted to know why adults at the party failed to stop the senior, who was wearing a white-hooded outfit, from entering, much less winning a prize.

"There are a number of questions I have and don't yet have answers to," Bleke said.

Contacted by the newspaper, the student declined to discuss his Halloween outfit. He said school leaders advised him to keep mum, and that he didn't want to cause any more trouble for himself.

Gotta love those City High kids! (City High is supposed to be one of the flagship highschools in the city, with an application process like college)

I find this to be a sad state of affairs when our children willingly dress up in a uniform that is symbolic of pure, unadulterated, evil hate.

I don't think it to be as scary as it is sad and disappointing. To be scared, you need the emotion of fear. I don't fear the costume.

I remember watching a play with James Whitmore called, "Give 'Em Hell, Harry", which was a one-man play on the life of President Harry S. Truman. When President Truman was a judge in Missouri during the 20's, the local Klan was causing a lot of trouble for one of his Jewish friends. President Truman marched out on foot to one of their rallys in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night to confront them. Before he left, he called them the dumbest son's-of-bitches in the world because only a Jew could sell them a $2.00 bedsheet for $20.00.

The man had class and style.
