Default noise cancellation for the pc

max pc mentioned that a byu physicist made a noise suppression system with four tiny speakers for the computer. "going from soft talking to a low whisper"

they also mentioned that it was put together with readily availabe parts for around $20. this sounds like something interesting to use to quiet down a pc. any comments on how they did it?

They probably produced frequencies that were 180 degrees out of phase with noise from different components thereby partially cancelling the effect of the noise. If it were only one fan you could effectively make it darn near silent.

I don't think I want to hear a whisper in my ear from a PC......thats kind of disturbing.

However, if you can get speakers to cancel the noise from the cancelling speakers...then it would be interesting.

yeah, i understand the concept of noise cancellation. i'm just wondering what parts he could've used to quiet his computer down with $20 of readily available components. noise cancellation stuff is usually pretty expesnive.

Did you try different types of fans. The angle of the blades are critiical. There are also noise dampening kits available for PSU, fans, and hard drives. That may be the best bang for the buck.

thanks. that's the same guy that the max pc thing mentioned. it'll be interesting to see how this could be implemented in cases from the manufacturer.

i read the artical, but even though they used a 80mm fan, for the inital testing, they then took a smaller fan that made less noise and put the mikes around it so that it could fit in the space of the original fan,

so actually not all of the sound reduction is caused by their aparatus, but alsos because of the smaller fan.

Yes, that is what noise cancellation is, taking something that produces sound waves to cancel another's sound waves. Think of two exact water waves heading towards each other. The waves hit, and both are unable to continue forward movement. That is sound cancellation; stopping the sound wave before it is actualized.
