| 5 reformats 4 windows re-installs 3 days worth of time wasted 2 trips down to the student computer lab 1 unhappy tweaker and a partridge in a pear tree later...... I've come to the conclusion that Norton Ghost 2003 doesn't especially like raptors, SATA hard drives in general, a combination of sata and ide drives, the 865PE chipset, 3COM LAN, some combination of those factors........or just me. To its credit, it has saved my ass in the past, but my recent experience hasn't been so good. I know most of these components are pretty commonplace among this crowd so just be warned... There's nothing worse than preventative hardware that does the complete opposite of what it's supposed to do (I tried with it unupdated and completely updated as well BTW). You'll end up thinking," Whew, finally done installing everything and tweaking every last setting for 5 hours.....let me back this crap up before something bad happens." . . . [OBSENITY].........................[/OBSENITY] While I'm here, does anyone have any experience with other image-writing software? What would you recommend? (preferable something that you can run off of removeable media or completely in windows) Thanks. P.S.--Raptors kick ass. ![]() | ||

| I use Ghost 2002 because supposedly that is more RAID friendly, works for me. However, I have been giving serious consideration to Drive Image 7. DI7 used to be owned by PowerQuest, but believe it or not Symantec bought them out and decided the product was so damn good that they would continue supporting and developing it. So Symantec owns both Ghost and Drive Image. I like the idea of being able to do a backup from within XP and have it run in the background. It also supports just about any kind of media you might own. A little pricey (and yes, imaging software is one area I won't take a chance) but looks like it might be worth the extra scratch. | ||

| Yeah, I was actually looking at DI7 earlier after I posted this, but noticed, like you said, that they were bought out by Symantec. That made me a little wary, but since it runs within Windows and aaron said it worked on his raptor I think I'll give it a shot. Thanks alot for the feedback guys. I'm going to be so bummed if it screws up again, though. ![]() | ||
