Default n00b DSL Question

Yea im still kinda new to the DSL game and i was wondering if there were any way that i could turn on my computer and be connected already to my DSL. I have Earthlink DSL and im usin a Netgear Switch. Right now the only way i know of connecting right when i start my computer up is by having another computer sharing the internet... there must be a better way

If you have a Cable/DSL router (not a switch or hub), then you can plug your computer into that and your computer will be assigned an IP address on bootup by the DHCP server of the router (provided your DSL modem is on when you turn on your computer). They can be pretty expensive, around $100 or more. You should be able to tell Windows XP that you connect through the Internet through a LAN and your IP address is automatically assigned. The directions that come with the routers have a step-by-step walkthrough to get you online. If you don't want to spend the cash, tell Windows XP to connect automatically in the settings of the network connections. As soon as you click on the IE icon, MS Outlook, etc., it will hesitate momentarily while it connects to the Internet..then resume the program.

Taz is right, check around for low prices. You might want to check cNet or some other site for reviews on routers. I've heard that some of the cheaper ones are more hassle than they are worth. I've heard of firewall software (Norton, ZoneAlarm, etc.) conflicting with some routers.
