Default Linux Distro

Which live linux distro should I get? I am new to linux, and would like to learn more about it.

Knoppix, or Knoppox-STD?

Thanks .

Well, I notice you're asking about "Live" distro's and knoppix at that, I've only had experience with Mandrake and SuSe... out of the two I'd recommend SuSe.... big corporate backing would be the main reason. It's the only one of the two which had no problem recognizing any of the hardware I've thrown at it.

Granted I am still a newbie at Linux and I look forward to seeing what others recommend.

I only have a 20gb Maxtor diamondmax 7200rpm drive. I went with quality, intead of quantity at the time, I know I need to upgrade it.

Otherwise I would partition it, and install a regular linux distro. Until I get more HDD, I just want a live one to learn more.

Well, both Mandrake and SuSe offer Live versions.... another option would be Damn Small Linux, yet another version which'll boot from CD. There are alot of different distros which offer "Live" versions, including Debian. If you have a high speed connection you may want to try them all... find what fits. From my personal experience, I've found that Mandrake and SuSe work best with my hardware.

Like I said though, I'm also new to the world of Linux, so you may want to wait for some more recommendations.

I think Stereomod's playing with Debain at the moment so you may want to hit him up for feedback as well.

Slackware all the way. I'm a n00b to linux too, and I've found it to be great, having tried RedHat, Fedora, Mandrake, and a crapload of live distros.

Suse is the best distro in my opinion.
I haven't found anything that wouldn't work with it yet.

Knoppix is great, if you want to learn, since there is no installing needed.
Just boots off a cd.

So if you want to learn.. Knoppix.
If you want to actually install and use.. Suse.

STD stands for "Security Tools Distribution." Pretty much self-explainitory.

Knoppix is the gold standard for live distros. Its worked on everything i've ever put it in besides some older laptops. The others are good, but they have their own issues.

I have had experience using Solaris and Irix, but I have never seriously used Linux, except for a red-hat machine I set up to be a router (and have never looked at since). I have been using Knoppix STD for awhile now, and I really like it. Having never used and widley distributed distributions, I can only say that I really like Knoppix STD. All the tools are easily accessible and included on the cd. If it doesn't recognize some of your hardware, I say, all the better. You wanted to learn, right? I don't use the live version, but I installed it on my laptop. It recognized evreything except for my broadcom internal wi-fi adapter, but I was able to use ndisWrapper to make that work.
