Default Comic books on the big screen...

Thought I would start this thread as a place where everyone can come to talk about the various comic books that have made it to the big screen. I tried to go back and find one that I could use but determined it would be easier just to start a new one.

Anyway, here's some news...

In the September 2004 edition of Starburst, it announces that the new "Fantasic Four" film is taking shape. For the FF we have the following stars...

Ioan Gruffudd will be playing Mr. Fantastic, Richard Reed.
Michael Chiklis will be playing Ben Grimm (a kick-ass excellent choice!)
Chris Evans (from "Not Another Teen Movie" fame) will be Johnny Storm (geez, what a flamer!)
and...
everyone's favorite, Jessica Alba will be starring as The Invisible Girl, Sue Richards.

Apparently, Rachel McAdams ("Mean Girls") and Elizabeth Banks ("Catch Me If You Can") were up for the part, but the Dark Angel whupped up on everyone to get the part.

Release date is set for around July 2005 and will be going up against Tom Cruise in "Mission Impossible III" due to be released by Paramount in the same week. Personally, I'd like to see "FF" crush "MIIII".

Other news....

Looks like Halle Berry won't be playing Storm in the upcoming "X3" movie. Officially, she might be filming a new "Catwoman" movie (please, no!); however, rumors are abound that she feels that she is too popular to play a supporting role to Hugh Jackman and the rest of the cast.

As far as a release date for "X3", it's unknown at this time whether or not it'll be up anytime soon. Brian Singer had been hired to direct the film but he recently got offered the director's chair for a new Superman movie. Apparently, Brian is a huge Superman buff so there's talk that "X3" and a re-make of "Logan's Run" may be filed away for a future time. Personally, I hope that he doesn't do a re-make of "Logan's Run" because at the time, there was a lot of talk that the script was going to be radically different that the first film.

Speaking of Hollywood's fair-haired favorite, it seems that he's too busy to star in the big screen adaptation of "Iron Man", due out later next year. Cruise says that right now he's got too much going on with "War of the Worlds" and "MI3" to take on the part of Tony Stark. Am I upset? Hell no! I'm happy as hell because I think that he would have totally sucked at that role. Yeah, he's a great actor, but there is no way he could pull it off. Who would I cast? Originally, I would have cast Tom Selleck from the 80's but being a little more realistic, I would now probably shoot for George Clooney.

Seems like Marvel is going overboard with the comic book to screen craze going on. Some of the ones that they have slated for scripts include Luke Cage, Namor, Black Widow, Deathlok, Iron Fist, Ant Man, and Black Panther, to name a few. I don't know about you, but I see all of these as potential bombs. Only avid comic book collectors will flock to see these films and non-comic book fans won't have any idea that the movie is based upon a comic. This, in my opinion, is a little too much. Others coming out that would be more recognizable to the general public is Thor, Nick Fury (maybe), Captain America, Silver Surfer (yes!), and Ghost Rider (funny, I think that Kid Rock would be great in this role).

Well, post any news ya find on your favorite comic book hero making that jump to the silver screen.

Rob

P.S.
In a related topic, (this may have been in another thread) but it looks like Duane "The Rock" Johnson might be playing the lead role on the "Doom" movie.

I'm not too dissapointed that Halle Berry won't be playing Storm in X3... I don't think she ever really fit the mold at all. She is too big an actress to be playing sideling character roles. She has been great in other movies but I think she just sucked balls in both X movies. There just wasn't enough for her to do with the character she was portraying...

Not too surprising there. Critics are touting him to be the next Ahhnold-type action hero.

Halle Berry is over-rated.
Good riddance if it's true.

Nice to see some of those other titles in the works.

Obviously Halle isn't making wise choices in her acting career. I myself thought she was cast perfectly for the role of Storm, even if it is a supporting role.

So she turns down the chance to do X3, and what do we get in return....Catwoman, which I haven't seen because as soon as the ads for it started to run I knew it was going to bomb like a MOAB, and those that saw it only confirmed my thoughts on it.

I myself am looking forward to the Iron Man movie, But I just hope they dont mess up his suit.
Aside from that I think it would be cool to see an Avengers movie.

And with the Halle thing, I didn't even notice that she was storm. Pfft.

Actually there was a Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. [as opposed to the Howling Commandos] movie starring David Hasseloff. It was terrible.

Deathlok I think would work. He's such a minor character in the Marvel Universe I don't think too many people would CARE he was a comic first. See also Hellboy

Irom Man works for the same reason RoboCop works - I think.

Like to see Sgt. Rock on the big screen ... animated tho not live action - Bob Kanigher's artwork is just stunning.

Part of the problem of bringing comic book stories to the big screen is that screenwriters or some other a-hole in the process feels it necessary to re-write the story. Dude ... the reason the movie company licensed the property is the story. Most of the Marvel properties, especially the Dolph Lungren Punisher and the Hulk suffered because of this.

As long as we're saying what comic books they should movie-ize I'm gonna have to suggest Silver Surfer or Green Lantern. They're both big enough names to draw a crowd, the possibilities for special effects usage are out of this world, and not enough people know that much about them so people won't get all that mad when Hollywood butchers the comic book storyline. Yeah, a few real hard core comic book geeks will hate hate the movies, but I suppose that's what we get for devoting our childhoods to comics.

The Rock could easily pull the role for the Doom 3 movie.
I wonder if they'll ever make a Halo movie..

The rock won't be playing the lead role in D3, but rumor has it that he will have some part in the movie.

I never found Halle Berry to be very good in the X-Men movies, she never even had lines
more complex than an invalid could understand, but then again, changing actresses for a
somewhat major role halfway through a series of movies is lame. Finish what you start I say.

Actually, he will play the lead if and only if his current project, a screen adaptation of the video game "Spyhunter" (which I think is a mistake for him), is pushed back till next year. It seems very possible because the movie is to be shot in Prague and Amsterdam this winter. Talk is that they may want to wait until the spring with better weather.

One tiny rumor out there is that Vin Diesel may perhaps take on the role of "Unnamed Space Marine #1". I don't think that it's likely as Vin made his decision early last year by taking on the role of Rid**** in the Chronicle series. Up to that point, Vin had the possibility of three different franchises to chose from to provide a foundation for a long acting career. Those choices were Rid****/Pitch Black, the Fast and the Furious, or the XXX franchise. Initially, he was going to pick up on the XXX franchise as he felt the younger generation of today wanted a more badass James Bond character, but decided against it perhaps because of worn-out idea of James Bond type characters.

Anyway, Dwayne Johnson will either play the lead role in "D3" or none at all. He's currently got five projects on the burner right now (one being the character of Johnny Bravo in "Johnny Bravo") for the next year or two. If "Spyhunter" does get pushed back and Universal can get a freakin' script ready (too many Chiefs and not enough Indians), he'll be on the big screen late next summer with "D3".

Oh, and it appears that Del Toro has gotten the thumbs up to start on "HellBoy II". Ron Perlman should be back for that one. You know what? Maybe Perlman would be a good casting call for "D3".

Too true, too true. He got lucky once or twice and Hollywood has been slobbering all over that idiot. All you have to do is to watch "DeathRace 2000" just once to understand what I'm talking about.

Hahaha, that movie rocks! It is almost like a really cheesy spin on A Clockwork Orange style movies.

I always thought "TheTick" got the short shaft. Take all of the original cast members (especially Partick Warburton!) from the defunct TV show, put them on the big screen and give the "real" superpowers.

Hell, it'll be a PERFECT action comedy . Unlike the last few, which totally suck ass.

So is there an Iron Man movie coming out? I've heard stuff about an advengers movie of which he's part. I always got a more hispanic impression of him, Antonio Banderas anyone? he's got the moustache. I think Clooney looks more like Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four than Iron Man. Unfortunatly I've heard that Leonardo DiCaprio might be cast as Iron Man instead.

Halle Berry was good as Storm and its a shame her ego would rather do Catwoman than the solid storm she's been.

a Doom movie? bout time; ought be veeeeeery interesting, hell, with some of its visuals some monsters could go strait from the game to the silver screen models. I'd be willing to bet they try and add more story to it though. Does this mean a Half-Life movies on the horizon? and I'd think Res Evil is to thank for the game to movie trend startiing, thought someone said that Farcry was gonna make the transition too...

I think that the fabric of reality would be torn apart, thread by thread, should Leo be cast as Tony Stark. In my humble opinion, Leo has only had one role in which I found him to be a competent actor, and that was the role of Johnny Depp's little brother in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?".

Yeah, maybe Banderas would make a better Stark than Clooney. Additionally, Clooney bombed in the role of Batman so you do carry a strong point.

Well, he did originally appear in a comic book as far back as 1928, a weekly comic serial from 1929 to 1967, a radio show from 1932 to 1947, a television series in 1950-51, another TV series from 1979-81, an actual movie in 1979, and yes, even a TSR game in the late 80's-early 90's.

What am I talking about?

Maybe this sounds familiar...........

Yes, you read it right. The illustrious television show where adolescents from all over America fell in love with the all-American woman Erin Gray, where little boys were buying up laser guns and reciting corny lines, and all the nerds like me were utterly fascinated with Twiki (purely in a technological sense...we realized that we could make our own friends to play with).

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - The COMPLETE series

I, for one, will be first in line at my local video store to obtain this piece of sci-fi history.
