| I have a VPN connection setup at work to access a remote email client. When the VPN is connected, my local machine wants to use the internet connection on the remote machine instead of the local connection. Does anybody know how to keep this from happening? Thanks | ||

I am connecting to a remote computer to access Outlook on the remote machine over the VPN using the Windows remote desktop. When the remote desktop is connected my local machine wants to use the connection on the remote machine for internet access making it really slow as it is send/receiveing data throught the VPN not my local connection.

| ok from what i gather its sounds like a common problem. now as pertaining to the VPN needing to use the net to connect to it. that is a very common way of doing it. As to connect to the VPN you need to be connected VIA internet as the VPN needs the ip of the other machine. Yes, it is going to be slow. So the only thing that i can say would be that you get used to it !!!!! i hope that helps and if not then i have given it my best!! thanks stereomod!! | ||

Its not that the VPN has to use the net to connect, that part is obvious, it has to be. The thing is that, say when I open up IE on my local machine to browse the web, instead of it using my local connection to access the net it goes through the VPN and uses the connection there, accesses the site I want then relays the data back through the VPN to be displayed on my local machine instead of accessing it directly with the local connection. I dont think you understood what I meant at first.

I know that with our VPN clients, once they are VPN'd into our network, their network/internet connection will not work for anything except VPN as long as the VPN client is connected. If what Clown suggests doesn't work, then try looking for settings in your VPN client that could possibly be denying other traffic through your local connection. Clown's idea is likely the solution though.

| We had the same issue here with remote useracoming in from their home networks through VPN. They couldn't access their home networked printer when running VPN. The problem is with what's called Split-tunnelling. This allows you to access another netowork while tunneling to your network via VPN. It may be turned off for security reasons. When we had split tunnelling open the end user, connected to the web or their home network via their high speed would open up a hole to our network through their VPN connection. If anyone on the web hacked their box then that hacker would be able to access our internal network via the home user's hacked connection. It was a serious security risk. You may want to check with the networking group to see if they disabled that ability on the VPN server. Good luck, brother! | ||

It does split the load between the connections on some things but when it does it gives like 95% of the load to the VPN and 5% to the local connection. I dont have any security concerns. I just need to have my VPN open pretty much all the time along with the use of direct access to the net from my local machine.

| If you have the permissions at work, load up the advanced view for AD users and computers and activate http for your email and use outlook web access or OWA email if you have that setup at your work. far easier then trying to tunnel to your work just for your email. just curious, do you have ICS checked on the sharing tab for your VPN connection? In the past I have disrupted my local lan connection that way, not just for other clients on my network but for me as well. Last edited by abyssling; 23-June-04 at 09:14 PM.. | ||
