Default Shopping for a gun

Well, I'm going to be in the market to buy a hand gun soon and was wanting some suggestions from yall with pistols. I've been looking at the
HK P2000 US. It's a bit on the pricey side but I think it would probably fit me best... I am left handed but right eye dominant so I tend to shot a hand guy (not often) with whatever hand feels like picking it up first and letteng her rip. The gun is designed be be used with any had as it has slide releases and magazine releases on both sides of the gun.

Mainly wondering what caliber I should go for with it., and any other brand/model suggestions....

Well before we can help you with what caliber, we need to know what you are going to be using it for. If you are going to be caring for concealed carry, hunting, or target shooting.

The H&K is a great pistol, you can't tear them up but they are very pricey.

Considered revolver-type handguns like the .357? Much more accurate.

Sorry I just have to link to HK's military offering: Link
Holy crap that looks like something from Unreal2k3...

If you aren't a total no0b and can get used to the extra steps ...the 45 ACP 1911 is an amazing gun...Hard to fault one of these and the single action won't send your second shot into the field somewhere...Takes getting used to but its a GREAT WEAPON.....
I prefer it over any .9mm ...but thats just my oppinion

If you prefer the double action then The SIG-Sauer P-225 is a good choice...has a pretty heavy trigger so you wont accidently shoot yourself like the light trigger on the ACP 1911...

thats just my oppinion I am but one person.....
but if you really want to scare the pants of the house intruder pull out the Marlin 30/30 with the hollow point black talon rounds and tell your intruder your about to make them look like swiss cheese if they dont leave...

That P2000 looks kinda small, or is designed small.. trigger finger, and grooves in the grip for two fingers.. pinkie on the bottom of the clip?

Concealed carry, Feral?

I'm looking at getting it for possibly getting a conceiled permit in the future. Mainly for home though until then. I think 9mm's are underpowered unless you are self loading the rounds. Most likely looking at the .40 cal

EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention I'm not looking for revolvers. Already have a S&W .357 Magnum Black Hawk.

Just get a Winchester 94 and carry it around. I guarentee, no problems with people messing with you.

It's also been said.. .50 cal rounds are expensive.

There's always the DE with the factory conversion kit for the .357 or the .44 magnum rounds.. and it might possibly save you money to use the same rounds as your revolver, so probably the .357? Either way.. the Deagles are scary, and even if its not the .50 its still going to do the job..

Then again, a .22 can do the job, just doesn't make such a large hole / mess of it

I'm biased when it comes to autos and will choose HK 9 times out of 10, it's a long story but they feel the best to me and always have. That's not to say that there aren't any other great manufacturers out there because there are, just my preference. The .40 is a good compromise in terms of caliber in that is strikes a good balance between the best aspects of the 9mm and the .45. The P 2000 is an excellent choice, ever since they started trickling into the states I've heard nothing but good reports.

First thing you'll want to do though when you've got your choices of manufacturer and caliber nailed down is to go to a range that has rental guns. If you have friends who have the model/caliber that you are looking into then use that as a test bed as range guns can be a bit squirrelly unless they are very well kept. Second thing: If your serious about getting an HK go over and talk to the guys at HK Pro. They have all types of folks in the forums from civilian, to military, to law enforcement. I found them to be a great source of information and a great bunch of guys.

Hope this helps and remember.... "In a world of compromise, some don't!"

OMG I thought I was all alone out there, I am left eye dominent and right handed..

HK is pricey but I would go and look at used guns, go haunt the local gun shops for a while might get lucky and find a barely used HK and works great and cheaper.. my 2 cents

I'm in that same boat, too, Bob..

Though actually, I guess I'm bi-shooting eye... I can do either just as well as the other.. right hand just is more natural to me to be pulling the trigger with...

I make a great example for teaching little kiddies on how the dominant eye messes up your aim, though..

If I were to carry a weapon concealed in public I would opt for a Kahr PM4043A. Oh yeah, I notice tht you are from so cal, if you are near the LAX airport I recommend you stop by the LAX gun range. Lots of guns to choose from and test drive.

I can shoot either eye, but I used to be left eye right hand domintant. I think you can switch dominant eyes somehow. I shoot my compound bow with my right eye and most guns with my left...go figure.

Anyways, cool gun, lots of money, but it will never let you down so I guess its worth it. Better than a sig.

My Springfield 1911-a1 is my high powered pistol of choice. I do consider it a little on the large side for personal carry but there is no doubting the stopping power of the 45 acp. A gun that has survived 90+ years of wars, conflicts and police actions can't be all that bad. Also considering that it is the most copied handgun ever invented tells you something about the designs reliability.

I say get a Glock23. I dont know where exactly you live but im in Georgia and Glock has a warehouse and you can purchase a pistol there at a very reduced rate. Also if you know someone in law enforcement they can get you a great deal from Glock.

Amen, you hear that the US Marines are going back to the 1911 from the Beretta 92F?

Being that I've instructed police officers and security personnel for a number of years (over 20 yrs...egads) I've often taught people to simply turn their head as so to only use one eye (I do this myself as I'm left-eye dominate and right-handed....i.e "line-of-sight'). As far as firearms, I always consider what current police and military are using as they go for the most reliable and easiest to use........Sigs and H&K are great choices.....
