| I know some of you guys have some woodworking skills, and I was wondering if anybody here was into Scrollsawing? Like, for decorative stuff. I think it's great, it's a great way to take your mind off things and you can do some pretty killer designs. It's like dremeling a really elaborate case window, except with wood and a saw. If any of you out there have any work done, post some pics!! I'll get around to posting mine if anybody else even replies to this thread.....I'm wondering now if this is going to be a dead thread, lol. | ||

| Luna, you use a scroll saw to cut fan grills? I had always wanted to do that, but never actually tried it. What kinds of materials do you use for your grills and what kinds of blades do you use on your scroll saw? I'd be a freaking pro if I got to scroll more than once or twice a year (I only can when I visit my grandparents, they have one but they live in Illinois) | ||

You can use just about any material as long as it is not much over an 1/8 inch thick. 1/4 inch acrylic does OK. For plastics I use a medium tooth blade and for metals I use a very fine tooth blade. With plastics you must use a coarser tooth so the material will not heat up and melt the cut back together, the bigger the teeth, the bigger the gaps between them allowing more air to get too the material to cool it off.Slower speeds are good with plastics if the saw your using is adjustable. With aluminum I go full speed with a fine tooth blade.

Yes,I should have added that, thanks Lat. Extruded acrylic will want to crack along the ldirection of extrusion and makes small details hard to achieve.

| Neo, unfortunately I have absolutely zero artistic skills, so I used a pattern on a sheet of paper and used some spray adhesive to attach it while I cut. When I was done cutting, I used sandpaper to sand off all of the paper and spray adhesive. I only wish I had enough drawing skills to come up and create my own designs. Duplex, yes, it creates an insane amount of sawdust. Which I thought might have been a problem with my asthma, but it wasn't. When I get done at the end of a long scrollsawing period, my nose is filled with sawdust and I have to drink something. On the scrollsaw I use, it has a blower next to the blade, not a vacuum. It just blows the stuff everywhere. It is a very nice saw though, unfortunately not mine.... | ||
