Default Went offroading today

So we had some snow, about 6-8" of it Sunday night. We didn't have school monday, and the past two days have been two-hour delays. I was coming home from school, and the roads were quite clear, and everything was fine. I got to my neighborhood, and everything was fairly clear, I hit a hill too fast and couldn't slow down. I ended up a few feet away from some trees and in a big pile of snow.

I didn't even bother with trying to get out, because i was in deep, and a 2WD Protege isn't good for getting out of the snow. I ran home, and got my dad. We grab a chain, and head out in the Civic. (too bad we don't have any trucks, or 4wd vehicles) We throw the chain on the back tow hook on the civic, and hook it to the back of the Protege. He puts it in 1st in the civic and stalls it, and I'm still in reverse in the protege. He starts it, and gives it more gas, and I just see the front of the civic moving sideways and some smoke rising from the front tires. And I'm giving reverse all I've got, so it finally starts to move. We got it out...but it scared me a little bit.

I've never really gone off of the road before or anything...just a reminder that I need to be more careful I guess.

Anyone else have any funny or not snow stories?

Ah. Out here i do that intentionally. Snow doesnt really stop a 3/4ton Yukon XL... nothing really does.

Yopefully you didnt f**k up your car. You'd better give it a full check over as you can damage stuff and not notice it right away in that kind of an accident.

The only thing I was slightly worried about were the boots that cover the CV-joints. I just replaced the left transaxle because it was clicking like a mofo...

I thought maybe I tore those boots, and that would suck, because it's a pain in the a55 to replace those. I'm going to give it a better check saturday afternoon when I wash teh beast.

M.D.K. - I'm not saying I don't pull the e-brake intentionally and get it sideways occasionally in the snow, I'm just saying I learned my lesson this time...hehehe..I'm getting pretty good at ebraking a 90 degree corner, sliding sideways and pulling out of it now..fun times...

The closest I ever came to something like that was just after Christmas 1999 - the back end of my car (a Ford Sierra Sapphire) swung round 135 degrees on a bend covered in black ice, & I slid about 50 meters down a hill before I found any grip.

No damage as I didn't hit anything: I was doing 5-10 mph at the time.

Those Sierras were evil handling sheds

I went and tossed my ford tempo into a ditch one winter just after graduating from high school. The kind folks that owned the house lined the ditch with a field stone wall to keep the ya hoo's out of thier yard. Thats was the end of the ford. Snapped the stearing tie rod, bent the strut and inner fender. Would have cost me more than a new car to have it fixed. Decided to buy my first vw at that point. have never looked back.

Ok i got a story to top yours....

Today its cold as hell
Sgt. (My recruter) decides its the perfect time to go test out his new gun that he got a week earlier (Springfield .40 cal XD pistol) go to Cabellas get some ammo all the normal stuff.
Here in ND most just go out of town and shoot in some farm fields.
All was fine and dandy but keep in mine that were going along a dirt road going though a field in 18"-20" of snow.
We get out there and stop Sgt. puts out a few rounds and we decided to warm up (walking though 20"+ snow drifts isnt the warmest thing in the world, expecially when its the coldest day of the winter. -35F at the time. All of us wearing normal shoes, jeans, jackets, gloves, and hats.)

We go to pull the truck arround. (2003 Dodge Ram Hemi with high performance road tires, and crapload of performance parts.)

Nothing better then hearing the sound of spinning tires in the middle of nowhere. Has happend to me plenty of times cause i live in hickville. But it was rediculas, so much snow. So cold, just couldnt do anything. No shovel nothing out in a field.

So were digging with our hands cause it got stuck cause of all the snow was hitting the truck, not enough ground clearence to clear the 19" of snow when you dont already have forward momentum.

finally a farmer comes and hookes up a tow rope after he got unstuck from trying to help us (he had a shovel) (truck was 2003 Chevy Silverado if your wondering)

We get out and we got warm inside.

If only we had more ground clearence and got rid of those lower profile high performance tires and got some off road ones with huge lugs.

Mud is one thing but snow is to damn cold to get stuck in a field for.

No, camper, i meant intentionaly go OFFROAD into the deepest snow i can find. Keep in mind responsibility and controll are the most inmportant factors here, so dont try it if you dont know what you're doing or are wasted. Your vehicle must be capable too. While 3 ft of snow is no match for a 3/4ton yukonXL, you will for sure get stuck in just about anything less.

As far as onroad, well lets just put it this way: In my rear wheel drive astro, i can do a donut untill i take my foot off the gas. Anyone else who's driven one in snow can vouch for that.

me_john.. I think that weather is getting here now. It's dropped 10 degrees in the last hour and its supposed to be -25 tomorrow.
