Default Bad Day

Well I got a computer all fixed up for a customer showed him around, went on the internet, everything worked. About an hour after i get home, (he lives an hour away) he calls me.

"My computer is going crazy it keeps restarting!!!!" So I ask when did it start doing this? "After i went on the internet and opened up yahoo and went to get coffee" So im thinking great, blaster worm! I have him go into task manager and look at what prosseces are running, and sure enough msblast.exe. The computer stoped restarting at this point and the start menu is gone. Everything works but there is no start bar. He's downloading the patch that will hopefully fix it. He lives an hour away so i really dont want to drive back there!!

This guy knows its not my fault or his but he's pissed off. Who ever wrote the blaster should be shot 12 times! (not literaly)

Anyways sorry for the rant but this day sucks, ive been on the phone trying to get it fixed up. Anyone got anuy sugestions please post!

Great even more bad news, he got the patch, he got it on a floppy (from a diff comp) and now he goes to put it in his dinosaur and the floppy drive craps out. So now he has no way of even getting the patch. Jeez this is pissing me off so much!!!

Perhaps a SP1 Update would fix it? Or just a windows update...These should have been installed before even browsing the 'net. I'm assuming he's using WinXP, but what version? I noticed just going from Home to Pro got rid of some bugs...try that if you would like.

I got the blaster worm a few months back and had to low level format my disk. I had two partitions on it and both were infected so I had to wipe it all clean. Lost all my music and backup stuff on the other partition. Good Luck

Ive never got the blaster worm. I use Opera for my mail, that may help. And mcafee detects anything in my mail as well. Sucks for the people who get the blaster worm.

I use the Symantec web site below.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com...ools.list.html

That is a link to stand alone removal tools they create for the most widely spread viruses and they are free to download. Usually I keep a copy of them on my external hard drive to remove viruses on customers PCs - they work well. They have one for your blaster worm.....its really not that difficult of a virus - just remember the updates.

Also on a sidenote - I have a 20 ft cat5 cable plugged into my router that I use to update PCs before I ship them out the door. Takes an extra 10 mins or so on broadband but it cuts down on this type of thing - customers on dialup appreciate it aswell.

To remove W32/Blaster-A manually on Windows 95/98/Me and Windows NT/2000/XP:
ensure you have installed Microsoft patch MS03-026.
press Ctrl+Alt+Del
in Windows NT/2000/XP click Task Manager and select the Processes tab
look for a process named msblast.exe in the list
click the process to highlight it
click the 'End Process' (in Windows 95/98/Me 'End Task') button
close Task Manager.
Search for the file msblast.exe in the Windows system folder (usually a subfolder of Windows or WINNT) and delete it.
In Windows NT/2000/XP you will also need to edit the following registry entry. The removal of this entry is optional in Windows 95/98/Me.
At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.
Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entry:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

in the righthand pane select

windows auto update = msblast.exe

and delete it if it exists.
Close the registry editor.
You should reboot your computer and repeat the above process to ensure all traces of the worm have been removed from your system.

Shut down msblast.exe in the processes and your done......then just use the program to remove the infected files. If you cant use a floppy download it - burn it on a cd - use a usb memory key thingy........stick a diff floppy drive in it real quick.

EDIT: Too slow BA already has you covered.

Mine doesnt top all but it's close. I'm really tight on $$$ now and my I rode up on my road bike to pick up my paycheck and W2 form, and they flew out of my pocket on the way home. If I'm lucky they are in the river because I was clipping along at 40 plus on the beaches and they probably flew out from all the wind.

They can print me a copy of my W2 but they won't do a paycheck stop or whatever it is, it costs a fee but it's better to lose two or three dollars to pay for another one than to lose a whole paycheck.

Hey an update on this with some bad news, we formated the system and did a clean install. When he logged on to the internet in about 5 minuets the blaster came up again!!! I dont know why! This is pissing us off. Is there a setting or something that would let it through. I know the windows firewall wasent on, we enabled that now. He is going to trry to get the patch offline as there are no effects as of now. Anyone got any ideas?

Leave that firewall on .... that should keep you from getting it. Get that PC to a broadband connection behind a firewall and do the updates.
